Chapter 1
Dedication
The author dedicates the book to W. G. E. and friends K. H. and G. C. L. M., clarifying it is neither allegory nor fable but a story to be read for its own sake, and provides pronunciation notes for proper names.

Epigraph
The epigraph presents the traditional ballad of Thomas the Rhymer, in which True Thomas encounters the Queen of Elfland beneath the Eildon Tree, setting a tone of enchantment, fate, and otherworldly visitation.
Chapter 3
The Worm Ouroboros
The opening chapter introduces the setting of Demonland and the lords Juss, Goldry Bluszco, and Spitfire, who receive a challenge from King Gorice XI of Witchland, leading to a wrestling match that results in Gorice's death and the subsequent coronation of Gorice XII.
Chapter 4
The Induction
Lessingham and his wife enjoy a peaceful evening in their home in Wastdale, reading from the saga of Njal and discussing the mysterious Lotus Room. After a walk on the fell-side, Lessingham sleeps alone in the Lotus Room, where he is awakened by a martlet that summons him to a journey. He rides a winged horse-chariot to a great island, guided by the martlet.
Chapter 5
The Castle of Lord Juss
At Lord Juss's castle Galing, a festival is interrupted by an ambassador from King Gorice XI of Witchland, who delivers an insulting summons demanding the Demons' submission. The Demons, led by Juss, Spitfire, Goldry Bluszco, and Brandoch Daha, react with restrained fury and prepare to deliberate their response.
Chapter 6
II: The Wrastling for Demonland
The wrestling match between King Gorice XI and Lord Goldry Bluszco unfolds before the Red Foliot and assembled lords. After a first even bout, the King cheats in the second by gouging Goldry's nose, but the Red Foliot, cowed by Corinius's threats, refuses to void the fall. In the third bout, Goldry, enraged, hurls the King headfirst to the ground, killing him. The Witches are dismayed as Goldry's brothers support him from the ground.
Chapter 7
III: The Red Foliot
The Red Foliot hosts a feast for the Witches and Demons after the wrestling match and death of King Gorice XI. Lord Juss refuses to eat or drink with the Witches, accusing them of betrayal. Lord Gro attempts to persuade the Red Foliot to allow a night attack on the Demons, but the Red Foliot refuses to allow murder under his roof. Gro then tricks the Red Foliot into signing a treaty against Demonland by showing a forged letter, but the Red Foliot still insists both parties depart in peace the next day.
Chapter 8
Conjuring in the Iron Tower
King Gorice XII prepares a perilous conjuration in the Iron Tower to destroy the Demons. He tests Lord Gro's courage with phantasms and a cockatrice, then instructs him in the forbidden spells. Gro proves his mettle, and the King reveals his plan to use dark magic against the Demons, recalling the fate of Gorice VII who was torn apart by his own summoning.
Chapter 9
King Gorice's Sending
King Gaslark sails homeward on the middle sea with seven ships of war, when he encounters the Lord Juss's damaged vessel, which has been struck by a sending from King Gorice XII. The Demons, including Brandoch Daha and Spitfire, urge an immediate attack on Carcë to rescue Goldry Bluszco, but Juss hesitates, doubting the Goblins' steadfastness and the likelihood of Goldry being held there. After heated debate, lots are cast to decide who will return to Demonland to raise a fleet; Spitfire draws the lot and departs, while Juss, Brandoch Daha, and Gaslark set sail toward Carcë.
Chapter 10
VI: The Claws of Witchland
King Gaslark leads a night assault on Carcë with Juss and Brandoch Daha, but the attack fails due to poor reconnaissance and a counter-ambush by Corinius and Corund. The Goblins are routed, and Juss and Brandoch Daha are captured after a fierce stand, being netted and dragged into the fortress.
Chapter 11
VII: Guests of the King in Carcë
After the battle, King Gorice XII holds a banquet in Carcë. Lord Juss and Lord Brandoch Daha are captured and chained in the old banquet hall, tormented by the sight and smell of food. The King deceives Prince La Fireez about the Demons' involvement. Lady Prezmyra, Lord Gro, and Lord Corund discuss the situation, with Corund warning that La Fireez, owing a debt to Juss, must not learn the truth.
Chapter 12
The First Expedition to Impland
Lord Juss and Lord Brandoch Daha return to Demonland after their disastrous embassy to Carcë. Juss, grieving for his lost brother Goldry Bluszco, reveals that a true dream has instructed him to seek tidings of Goldry on the mountain Koshtra Belorn in Impland. Despite the temptation to immediately wage war on Witchland, Juss resolves to follow the dream. Brandoch Daha recalls a book given by King Gaslark, written by Lord Gro, which describes the routes to Impland and the Moruna. The Demon lords gather at Krothering, where Brandoch Daha reads from the book, confirming that the only way to Koshtra Belorn is across the Moruna from the Gulf of Muelva. The company resolves to undertake the expedition.
Chapter 13
Salapanta Hills
Juss, Spitfire, and Brandoch Daha encounter Mivarsh Faz, who reveals that a northern warlord (Helteranius) has conquered Orpish. They later reunite with Brandoch Daha at a spy-fortalice, who tells them of Helteranius's army. Zeldornius arrives, and the Demons attempt to reconcile him with Helteranius and Jalcanaius Fostus, but Zeldornius insists on battle, citing omens and fate.
Chapter 14
X: The Marchlands of the Moruna
The Demon lords journey eastward from Salapanta toward the Moruna, passing through haunted woods, a gravelly sea, and desolate vales. They come to the castle of Ishnain Nemartra, where a mysterious lady offers a challenge: whoever stays awake all night watching her sparrow-hawk may ask one earthly boon. Brandoch Daha wins the challenge but, seduced by the lady's beauty, asks for her body instead of a wiser gift. She grants his desire but lays a curse on him: war, the ruin of Krothering, and vengeance denied to his hand. The next morning, the castle is revealed as a ruin. The company continues, warned by Mivarsh Faz that Jalcanaius Fostus and his forces are pursuing them. They decide to take refuge in the hold of Eshgrar Ogo.
Chapter 15
XI: The Burg of Eshgrar Ogo
Corund and Gro besiege the Demons in the Burg of Eshgrar Ogo. After a parley in which Juss refuses Corund's terms, Corund executes Philpritz Faz and launches an assault that fails. A second parley offers to spare Brandoch Daha's followers if he betrays Juss and Spitfire, but Brandoch Daha scorns the offer and challenges Corund to single combat, which Corund declines. Later, Gro confesses his inner turmoil and loyalty to Corund, who forgives him. A siege ensues, and on the fifth night of fog, the Demons sally forth, breaking through the lines.
Chapter 16
Koshtra Pivrarcha
Juss, Brandoch Daha, and Mivarsh Faz continue their perilous journey into the mountains, facing storms, ice, and near-death experiences as they ascend the great north buttress of Koshtra Pivrarcha. Juss reveals that they must first look down upon Koshtra Belorn from the highest peak of Koshtra Pivrarcha to break a curse before they can safely approach her. After a night of terror in a blizzard, they press on, and Juss ultimately leads the final ascent to the summit, where the mist clears and they see the peaks beneath them.
Chapter 17
Koshtra Belorn
Lord Juss and Lord Brandoch Daha, accompanied by Mivarsh Faz, complete their perilous descent from Koshtra Pivrarcha and approach the cliffs of Koshtra Belorn. After a harrowing journey, they witness a supernatural light and music emanating from the mountain, leading to the opening of a portal. Queen Sophonisba appears, greeting them as the fated ones. She brings them into her palace, where they dwell for seven days. Juss repeatedly seeks news of his brother Goldry Bluszco, but the Queen puts him off, finally explaining that she is bound by fate and shares their enmity with Witchland.
Chapter 18
XIV: The Lake of Ravary
Queen Sophonisba leads Lord Juss and Lord Brandoch Daha to the Lake of Ravary, revealing the hidden daylight within the mountain and the surrounding peaks. She shows them the distant mountain where Goldry Bluszco is imprisoned. She gives them the hippogriff's egg, which must be hatched by the heat of great longing. Mivarsh steals the egg, hatches it, and attempts to ride the hippogriff, but is thrown and nearly killed. Juss and Brandoch Daha attempt to climb the forbidden mountain and are gravely injured. After months of recovery, a martlet returns to reveal that another hippogriff's egg lies in Demonland, prompting Juss's recovery and their decision to return home.
Chapter 19
Queen Prezmyra
On the night of May 26th, Lord Gro walks with Lady Prezmyra on the western terrace in Carcë. Prezmyra expresses her bitterness over the Demons' betrayal of her brother and her frustration that Witchland has not yet crushed Demonland. Gro agrees that the King should strike while Juss and Brandoch Daha are absent. Later, Corinius encounters Sriva and forcefully kisses her; she promises to meet him at her chamber an hour past midnight, then goes to her father Corsus. Corinius, pleased, plans to pass the time drinking and dicing.
Chapter 20
XVI: The Lady Sriva’s Embassage
Lady Sriva, daughter of Duke Corsus, boldly seeks a private audience with King Gorice XII after midnight, offering herself as a servant and pleading for an expedition to Demonland under her father's command. She reveals her knowledge of Lady Prezmyra's similar plans to secure the expedition for Corund. The King, after testing her resolve and questioning her motives, ultimately rebukes her for being sent as a bribe, but does not dismiss her outright.
Chapter 21
The King Flies His Haggard
King Gorice XII decides to send Duke Corsus, rather than Corinius, to lead the invasion of Demonland, despite Lord Gro's misgivings. The Lady Prezmyra petitions the King on behalf of her husband Corund, but learns that the expedition is already planned. On July 15, the fleet sails from Tenemos with Corsus, Laxus, Gro, and Gallandus.
Chapter 22
The Murther of Gallandus by Corsus
King Gorice XII receives letters from Corsus detailing his campaign in Demonland, including the sinking of Demon ships, a battle at Crossby Outsikes, and the burning of Drepaby Mire. However, Lord Gro arrives and reports the disastrous aftermath: Corsus's stubbornness led to a defeat at the Rapes of Brima, and in a drunken rage he murdered Gallandus in his sleep. The army is mutinous, and Spitfire besieges Owlswick. Gro urges the King to send succour, but Gorice XII, seemingly unmoved, attends a banquet.
Chapter 23
Thremnir’s Heugh
Lord Spitfire, besieging his own castle Owlswick held by Corsus and his sons, grows discontented with the slow progress and the loss of ships burned by Laxus. He sends Lord Zigg to raise fresh forces from the west. Meanwhile, Corinius leads the Witchland army against Spitfire's forces under Thremnir's Heugh. In a fierce battle, Spitfire is gravely wounded by Corinius in single combat and is carried away by his men to a mountain corrie, where Lord Volle tends to him and urges him not to despair for Demonland's future.

XX: King Corinius
Corinius enters Owlswick Castle after his victory, is crowned king of Demonland by Corsus under duress, and immediately exiles Corsus and his sons back to Witchland, asserting his authority and avoiding their treachery.
Chapter 25
XXI: The Parley Before Krothering
Corinius, having consolidated his hold on eastern Demonland, marches his main army westward toward Krothering, driven by both strategic necessity and his burning desire for Lady Mevrian, whose portrait he discovered. He sends Lord Gro as his envoy to demand Mevrian's surrender and hand in marriage. Mevrian scornfully refuses, recalling Gro from happier days in Goblinland, and declares that her cousin Spitfire is raising an army to drive the Witches away.
Chapter 26
XXII: Aurwath and Switchwater
The Lady Mevrian, watching from Krothering's battlements, receives tidings of the disastrous battle at Switchwater Way where Corinius ambushed the Demon forces, and witnesses King Gaslark's fleet landing at Aurwath only to be thrown back into the sea. She sends a messenger to Lord Spitfire to warn him of the miscarriage, and waits anxiously for news as the Witchland army encamps nearby.
Chapter 27
XXIII: The Weird Begun of Ishnain Nemartra
The Witchland army, led by Corinius, continues its assault on Krothering Castle. After several failed assaults, a council is held where Laxus, Heming, and Gro advise abandoning the siege to seek out the main Demonland forces, but Corinius insists on taking the castle. After a heated argument and a near-brawl, Corinius agrees to one final assault. The assault succeeds, and Mevrian surrenders the castle under terms that spare her people and the castle itself. Corinius takes possession of Krothering.

A King in Krothering
Corinius, now king in Krothering, attempts to force the Lady Mevrian to become his queen. She defies him with dignity and escapes the castle with the help of Heming and Cargo, who disguise her as a warrior. The chapter highlights themes of honor, loyalty, and the abuse of power.
Chapter 29
Lord Gro and the Lady Mevrian
Lord Gro, having left Witchland, wanders through the mountains of Demonland in a contemplative state, drawn by the beauty of dawn and dusk. He encounters the Lady Mevrian, who initially distrusts him but eventually accepts his loyalty after he proves his honor. They form a pact of friendship and hide together in a remote valley called Neverdale, where Mevrian recounts her escape from Krothering and her solitary survival.

XXVI: The Battle of Krothering Side
Corinius prepares to give battle to Juss and Brandoch Daha on Krothering Side. Despite Laxus's concerns about Corinius's reckless behavior, Corinius insists on fighting on his chosen ground. Meanwhile, Brandoch Daha executes a daring flank march over the mountains from Transdale, surprising the Witchlanders. The ensuing battle is fierce and chaotic, with Brandoch Daha performing extraordinary feats of arms, including killing Prince Cargo. The chapter ends with the battle still raging, highlighting the prowess of both sides.
Chapter 31
The Second Expedition to Impland
Lord Juss prepares for a second expedition to Impland to rescue his brother Goldry Bluszco, but faces tension with Brandoch Daha who is impatient to attack Corinius. Brandoch Daha briefly leaves Galing in anger, but returns with a hippogriff's egg from Dule Tarn, reaffirming his loyalty. Gaslark and Prince La Fireez arrive to join the quest, and a reconciliation is made with Lord Gro. The chapter ends with the fleet ready to sail from Lookinghaven.

Zora Rach Nam Psarrion
Lord Juss ascends the dread mountain Zora Rach to rescue his brother Goldry Bluszco, enduring illusions and horrors conjured by the powers of the place. He finds Goldry frozen and unresponsive, carries him down, and with Queen Sophonisba's aid, restores him with a kiss that breaks the enchantment.

XXIX: The Fleet at Muelva
The Demonland lords depart from Queen Sophonisba's realm and return to their ships at Muelva, where they learn that Laxus holds the Straits of Melikaphkhaz with eight score warships, blocking their return. Juss calls a council of war, determined to force a passage despite the odds.
Chapter 34
Tidings of Melikaphkhaz
King Gorice XII receives news of the destruction of his fleet by Lord Juss off Melikaphkhaz, with Laxus and all his men lost. He appoints Corund as captain general in Carcë. That night, Lady Prezmyra learns from a letter by Lord Gro that her brother died fighting for Demonland in the same battle. She urges Corund to raise forces and abandon Witchland to take revenge on the Demons, but Corund insists they must stay and face the coming siege.
Chapter 35
XXXI: The Demons Before Carcë
King Gorice XII, Lord Corund, and Corinius discuss the muster of troops in Carcë, noting defections and delays among allies. The Demons land at Ralpa and march north. In the ensuing battle, Juss makes a desperate tactical decision to weaken his left flank to break the Witchland center. Lord Gro is killed, and Corund is mortally wounded by Juss. Corund is brought to the banquet hall, where he awaits death in full armor. The King watches the end of the battle from his tower, and Heming is terrified by the King's expression.
Chapter 36
The Latter End of All the Lords of Witchland
King Gorice XII holds a council of war after the battle before Carcë, where Corinius reports the Demon army's strength and advises against a sally. Corsus urges peace, enraging the King, who dismisses him from the council and retires to the Iron Tower for sorcery. Later, Corsus reconciles with the lords at a midnight feast, drinking to the King's enchantment as a strange bale-light appears.

Queen Sophonisba in Galing
Queen Sophonisba arrives in Demonland to visit Lord Juss at Galing. She is welcomed with honor, but finds the Demonlords melancholy despite their victory over Witchland. Juss shows her his great sword and recounts past battles, but confesses that without worthy enemies, their lives feel empty. The Queen marvels at their discontent and urges them to find peace, but they long for the glory of war again.
