Chapter 1
I: Carson Napier
The narrator receives a mysterious letter predicting a ghostly visit, which he dismisses. After a series of events, Carson Napier appears and explains his plan to travel to Mars via rocket, having tested telepathic communication with the narrator. Napier seeks the narrator's help in recording his messages and managing his estate.
Chapter 2
II: Off for Mars
Carson Napier prepares to launch his rocket from Guadalupe Island, bidding farewell to his crew and Jimmy Welsh. After launch, the torpedo is deflected by the Moon's gravity, narrowly missing it but being pulled toward the Sun, leading to a fatal trajectory. Carson reflects on his impending doom and the vastness of space.
Chapter 3
Rushing Toward Venus
Carson Napier, alone in his torpedo, reflects on his psychological state as he hurtles toward Venus. Initially apathetic, he becomes excited as the planet looms closer. He prepares for a crash landing, dons protective gear, and parachutes into Venus's atmosphere. After a long descent through clouds, he lands in a giant tree, discovering evidence of intelligent life—a causeway and cut branches—before hearing terrifying sounds of creatures approaching.
Chapter 4
To the House of the King
Carson Napier awakens in a room on Venus, observing the strange foliage and the scantily clad inhabitants. He is taken to a meal with his captors and their women, noting their customs and attire. Over the next three weeks, he learns the Venusan language from Danus, the chief physician, and studies their culture and history. Danus explains the Amtorian belief that the world is a flat disc floating on a molten sea, surrounded by fire, and Carson attempts to correct this with his knowledge of astronomy, but Danus remains skeptical. The chapter ends with Carson being led to the house of the king.
Chapter 5
The Girl in the Garden
Carson Napier, now aware he is in the kingdom of Vepaja under King Mintep, learns about the social customs of the Amtorians, including their unique relationships and the absence of marriage. He becomes intrigued by a girl he glimpses in a neighboring garden and later sees five men stealthily entering that garden, prompting him to follow them. Meanwhile, Danus explains the history of the Thorist revolution, the reasons for the tree cities, and the medical advancements that prevent aging. Carson, feeling restricted as a guest-prisoner, demands his freedom but is warned that escape is impossible. His desire to see the girl again keeps him from wanting to leave.
Chapter 6
Gathering Tarel
Carson Napier, now living with Duran and Kamlot, prepares for his first expedition to gather tarel, a valuable material. Kamlot instructs him on the importance of carrying weapons and the dangers of the forest. They climb through the trees to find tarel, which turns out to be a giant spider-like creature's web. They cut it down, and Carson learns about the properties and value of tarel. The chapter also includes Carson's earlier encounter with Duare in the garden, where he declares his love for her, and his audience with Mintep, where he is offered a position as a soldier in the jong's guard.
Chapter 7
By Kamlot's Grave
Carson Napier, believing Kamlot dead from a targo attack, carries his body through the Venusian forest to return it to his people. After falling into a spider's web, he is rescued by Kamlot, who was not dead but paralyzed by the targo's poison. Carson revives him, and they set out together to find their way back to the city, discussing the dangers of Amtor and the customs of Kamlot's people.
Chapter 8
On Board the Sofal
Carson Napier and Kamlot are captured by Thorist sailors and brought aboard the Sofal, where they are imprisoned with other captives. They learn that Duare has been taken to a larger vessel. The next morning, they are put to work cleaning guns, and Carson is questioned by the ship's captain, who is suspicious of his origins. Carson claims to be a Vepajan and a doctor, and he and Kamlot are assigned duties. Carson befriends Honan, who reveals that Duare is 'the hope of Vepaja.'
Chapter 9
Soldiers of Liberty
Carson Napier, imprisoned aboard a Vepajan ship, gains the trust of the common sailors and prisoners through his tales of Earth. He identifies three key allies—Gamfor, Kiron, and Zog—and begins to plan a mutiny to seize the ship and escape. The plan is complicated by the presence of a suspected spy and the sudden closure of the prison hatch, forcing a delay. During the night, Anoos is murdered, raising tensions and threatening the conspiracy.
Chapter 10
Mutiny
Carson Napier and his Soldiers of Liberty execute a mutiny aboard the Sofal, seizing control of the ship after a violent confrontation with the officers. Carson attempts to restore order and establish his leadership, facing challenges from dissenters like Kodj. The chapter also covers the investigation into Anoos's murder, which Carson cleverly deflects, and concludes with plans to capture the Sovong to rescue Duare and other prisoners.
Chapter 11
XI: Duare
Carson Napier consolidates his command of the Sofal after the mutiny, planning to capture the Sovong. He arms loyal Soldiers of Liberty, confines dissenters, and successfully boards and captures the Sovong. After the capture, he releases the Vepajan prisoners, including Duare, whom he discovers is the girl he saw in the garden of the jong. Kamlot reveals that Duare is the virgin daughter of a Vepajan jong, and Carson realizes his love for her.
Chapter 12
A Ship!
Carson Napier confronts Duare about her feelings, leading to a tense conversation about love and Vepajan customs. Kamlot warns Carson of the consequences of his declaration, and Carson reveals his intention to marry Duare, causing Kamlot to draw his sword but ultimately spare his friend. Carson then addresses the crew of the Sofal, emphasizing discipline, and the ship closes in on a vessel flying the ongyan's pennant, leading to a confrontation with Moosko.
Chapter 13
Catastrophe
Carson Napier faces a series of crises aboard the Sofal. He discovers that Duare is missing, along with Moosko and Vilor, and learns that Vilor is a Thoran spy. A lookout is found murdered. The Sofal engages in a chase and battle with the Yan, during which Carson is distracted by thoughts of Duare and the mysterious land of Noobol. The chapter ends with Carson going to check on his prisoner, only to find an angan with Moosko and Vilor, raising suspicions.
Chapter 14
Storm
Carson Napier, aboard the Sofal, investigates the disappearance of Duare, Moosko, and the klangan. Gamfor deduces that Vilor, a Thoran spy, and Moosko conspired with the klangan to abduct Duare and escape to Noobol. Despite the raging storm, Carson decides to turn back to search for them. While on deck, a massive wave sweeps him overboard. He battles the sea, determined to survive, and swims toward the rocky shore of Noobol.
