  1. Chapter 1

    I: The Séance

At a séance hosted by Montague Faull at Prolands in Hampstead, the medium Backhouse attempts a materialization. The evening is disrupted by a mysterious crash, the late arrival of Maskull and Nightspore, and the eventual appearance of a phantom youth. A brash intruder, Krag, bursts in and interacts roughly with the apparition.

  2. Chapter 2

    II: In the Street

After the séance, Maskull, Krag, and Nightspore gather outside. Krag reveals that Tormance is the inhabited planet of Arcturus and proposes a journey there. Maskull is skeptical but intrigued after viewing Arcturus through a heavy lens that shows its double sun and a satellite. Nightspore reluctantly agrees to accompany them. Krag invites them to Starkness Observatory, where the voyage will begin, and departs, leaving Maskull and Nightspore to travel north.

  3. Chapter 3

    III: Starkness

Maskull and Nightspore arrive at the deserted Starkness Observatory. After breaking in, they discover a library with a cupboard containing bottles labeled 'Solar Back Rays' and 'Arcturian Back Rays.' One bottle accidentally activates and vanishes, leading to a discussion about Krag's mysterious intentions and the nature of the rays.

  4. Chapter 4

    IV: The Voice

Maskull and Nightspore prepare for their journey to Tormance. After a meager meal, they walk to the Gap of Sorgie, where Maskull hears mysterious drum taps. Returning to the tower, Maskull ascends alone, experiences crushing weight, and views Arcturus through a lens. A disembodied voice warns him that he is merely an instrument to be used and broken, and that Nightspore will return after his death.

  5. Chapter 5

    The Night of Departure

Maskull, Nightspore, and Krag prepare to depart Earth for Tormance. After a tense wait in the dark house, Krag arrives and performs a ritualistic wounding on both Maskull and Nightspore, which enables them to climb the tower stairs. They ascend to the rooftop, strip, drink a farewell toast, and board a crystal torpedo powered by Arcturian back rays. As the vessel launches, Maskull falls into a deep sleep, while Nightspore remains watchful and Krag pilots the craft.

  6. Chapter 6

    VI: Joiwind

Maskull, after drinking gnawl water, experiences a heightened sensory awareness of Tormance. Joiwind leads him to Shaping's Well, where she prays for his purity. Maskull learns of Krag as the author of evil and of Shaping (also called Surtur or Crystalman) as the creator. Joiwind performs a blood transfusion to revive Maskull, and they discuss the nature of God and the purpose of his journey.

  7. Chapter 7

    VII: Panawe

Maskull meets Panawe, Joiwind's husband, who speaks English and seems to read Maskull's thoughts. After crossing a heavy lake and climbing a precipice, they arrive at the cave home of Panawe and Joiwind. Joiwind collapses from exhaustion, and Panawe tells Maskull about his childhood, including a visit to the wise man Broodviol in the Wombflash Forest. Panawe also produces a crystal from his mouth, which he discards, and explains the fluid, lawless nature of life on Tormance.

  8. Chapter 8

    Panawe's Story

Panawe recounts his early life on Tormance, including his journey as a prodigy (without sex) to consult the wise Broodviol, who explains that his twin sister sacrificed herself for him. He vows never to destroy life. He later travels across Shaping's Causeway, meets the sorcerer Slofork, and witnesses the suicide of Slofork and the suspended Muremaker. Finally, he arrives in Poolingdred, meets Joiwind, and they fall in love.

  9. Chapter 9

    VIII: The Lusion Plain

Maskull awakens at Poolingdred, bids farewell to Joiwind and Panawe, and sets out across the Lusion Plain. During his journey, Panawe performs a mysterious musical recitative that seems to convey meaning beyond words. Maskull encounters the god-like figure Surtur, who declares Maskull his servant and helper. After the vision vanishes, Maskull feels a growing sense of destiny. He reaches a river near the Ifdawn Mountains, where he decides to sleep before continuing his journey. He is awakened by a crimson glow and discovers a sleeping woman nearby.

  10. Chapter 10

    IX: Oceaxe

Maskull awakens on his second day on Tormance with new organs: a sorb (will-eye) and a third arm. He encounters Oceaxe, who exchanges garments with him and openly expresses her desire for him. Maskull resists, citing his service to Surtur. Oceaxe kills a fish-like creature using her sorb and cooks it with a drude. They discuss the nature of Ifdawn, a land of quick decisions and straight lines, and Oceaxe explains the concept of 'absorbing' males to gain new passions. Maskull is disturbed by her amorality but feels drawn to her.

  11. Chapter 11

    X: Tydomin

Maskull awakens from a vision in a black cave, confronted by Tydomin. He declares he is 'awake' and that she must die for her crimes. Tydomin manipulates Oceaxe into walking off a cliff, killing her. Maskull confronts Tydomin about the murder, and she reveals her plan to sacrifice her own body and take over Maskull's male form, dedicating herself to Crimtyphon's memory.

  12. Chapter 12

    On Disscourn

Maskull and Tydomin journey across the harsh landscape of Disscourn toward a fiery lake, where Maskull intends to execute Tydomin for her crimes. Along the way, they encounter Spadevil, a mysterious figure who claims to bear a new law that supersedes the old. Spadevil transforms Tydomin's sorb into twin membranes and offers Maskull a similar transformation, introducing a new moral code based on duty and the rejection of past sins.

  13. Chapter 13

    Spadevil

Maskull, having acquired new organs that alter his perception, joins Spadevil and Tydomin on a journey to Sant. Spadevil preaches a doctrine of duty over pleasure, criticizing the followers of Hator for their pride and hypocrisy. They encounter Catice, who condemns Spadevil and Tydomin to death for backsliding. Maskull is forced to execute them, but after his own organ is destroyed, he renounces Spadevil's teaching, seeing the world as a charnel house and questioning the value of duty and pleasure.

  14. Chapter 14

    XIII: The Wombflash Forest

Maskull awakens on his third day on Tormance, haunted by the brutal murders of Spadevil and Tydomin. He wanders through the immense, gloomy Wombflash Forest, guided by mysterious drum taps. He meets Dreamsinter, who reveals that the drumming is Surtur and that Maskull came to steal Muspel-fire. They witness a spectral procession of Maskull, Krag, and Nightspore, during which Krag stabs the phantom Maskull. Overwhelmed by the tragic music and radiant light, Maskull faints.

  15. Chapter 15

    XIV: Polecrab

Maskull awakens in the forest after his vision of Dreamsinter, reflecting on Surtur and his own purpose. He meets the fisherman Polecrab and his wife Gleameil, who discusses the dangerous music of Earthrid on Swaylone's Island. Gleameil insists on ferrying Maskull there, despite Polecrab's warnings of death. Maskull agrees, though he is wary of bringing another woman into danger after Tydomin's death.

  16. Chapter 16

    Swaylone's Island

Maskull and Gleameil arrive at Swaylone's Island, a barren place littered with the bones of those who sought its legendary music. They find Earthrid, the current musician, who plays on the lake Irontick. Maskull attempts to summon the Muspel-light through his music, causing a catastrophic explosion that destroys the lake, kills Earthrid, and leaves Maskull stranded on the island of failure.

  17. Chapter 17

    Leehallfae

Maskull and Leehallfae journey up a ravine toward the head of a valley, where the life stream grows more intense and dangerous. Leehallfae explains that the stream's 'sparks' of life create living shapes when captured by matter, with the most vigorous sparks near the source producing no forms at all. Maskull experiences a physical transformation, sprouting six new eyes that allow him to see the struggle of sparks against clouds. He witnesses the birth of a plant-animal from a cloud, likening it to the birth of a thought and suspecting the work of a shaping force called Crystalman.

  18. Chapter 18

    XVII: Corpang

Maskull and Corpang journey through the underground world of Threal, encountering the Three Figures and experiencing visions of Muspel-light that reveal the deceptive Crystalman mask. A voice foretells Maskull's death, and they follow the drumming of Surtur, leading them toward a passage to the outer world. Corpang shares his lifelong search for Thire, and they discuss the nature of the three worlds.

  19. Chapter 19

    Haunte

Maskull and Corpang encounter Haunte, a man from Lichstorm, who transports them via a flying boat to the region under Sarclash. Maskull experiences a transformative vision of pain turning into joy, which he interprets as birth pangs. They meet Sullenbode, a woman of pure sex, who kills Haunte with a kiss when he tries to embrace her a second time.

  20. Chapter 20

    XIX: Sullenbode

Maskull, Corpang, and Sullenbode journey across the ridge toward Adage. Sullenbode reveals her willingness to sacrifice herself for love, and Maskull recounts his adventures on Tormance. The chapter culminates in a vision of Muspel-light and thunderous drum beats, which only Maskull perceives.

  21. Chapter 21

    XX: Barey

Maskull, Krag, and Gangnet travel through the region of Barey, heading toward the Ocean. Maskull experiences intense emotions under the rising of Alppain, the blue sun, and feels his sense of self dissolve. Krag and Gangnet display a deep hostility, debating pleasure, pain, and the nature of reality. As mist closes in, Krag announces Maskull's death, and Maskull has a vision of Muspel's fire and Krag striking a bloodred spot with a hammer.

  22. Chapter 22

    XXI: Muspel

Nightspore and Krag journey across a dark, glassy sea toward the gate of Muspel. Nightspore confronts the terrifying reality that Muspel is not all-powerful but locked in a death struggle with Crystalman's world of sin and illusion. He ascends a tower, witnessing through windows the nature of Crystalman's realm—where the Muspel-stream is perverted into individual wills seeking pleasure. On the roof, he realizes that Muspel is only himself and the tower, and that he must answer the cry of degraded spirits. Krag reveals himself as Surtur, and Nightspore chooses to enter Muspel, leaving behind his corpse and earthly self.
