Chapter 1
Vathek
The chapter introduces Vathek, the ninth Caliph of the Abassides, a ruler of immense wealth and curiosity who builds five palaces dedicated to each of the senses. His insatiable desire for knowledge leads him to construct a tower for astrological study, where he receives a prophecy of an extraordinary personage. A hideous stranger arrives in Samarah with magical wares, and after being imprisoned, escapes by killing the guards. Vathek's mother, Carathis, intervenes to calm him. The Caliph neglects his duties, indulges in impiety, and falls into a feverish state. Carathis, seeking a remedy, sets out on a perilous journey with her negresses and camel Alboufaki.
