Chapter 1
To My Readers
L. Frank Baum addresses his young readers, explaining that this new Oz book is written in response to their many requests for more stories about Dorothy and Oz. He introduces the new characters—the Shaggy Man, Polychrome, and Button-Bright—and hints at remarkable news from Oz that will be saved for a future book.

The Road to Oz
Dorothy meets the Shaggy Man and Button-Bright on the road to Oz, and they encounter various strange beings and challenges, including the Scoodlers and the Truth Pond, before finally arriving at the Emerald City for Ozma's birthday celebration.
Chapter 3
The Way to Butterfield
Dorothy meets the Shaggy Man and agrees to show him the road to Butterfield, but he tricks her into getting lost at a crossroads with many roads. They become lost together, and the Shaggy Man reveals his Love Magnet, which makes everyone love him.
Chapter 4
Dorothy Meets Button-Bright
Dorothy and the Shaggy Man continue along a winding road and encounter a lost little boy dressed in sailor clothes who calls himself Button-Bright. Despite Dorothy's persistent questions, Button-Bright can only answer 'don't know' to everything. The Shaggy Man suggests he join them, and Toto investigates the hole Button-Bright is digging. They decide to continue on their journey together, uncertain of their destination.
Chapter 5
A Queer Village
Dorothy, the Shaggy Man, Button-Bright, and Toto encounter a company of fox soldiers who escort them to the city of Foxville. They meet King Dox, who recognizes Dorothy as a friend of Princess Ozma and mentions Ozma's upcoming birthday celebration. The group learns they have entered another fairy adventure.
Chapter 6
King Dox
Dorothy, the Shaggy Man, and Button-Bright (now with a fox head) are guests of King Dox in Foxville. They enjoy a feast, attend a play, and are treated with respect, though Button-Bright is distressed by his transformation. The King asks Dorothy to secure him an invitation to Ozma's birthday celebration. The travelers depart the next morning, wary of the 'big, stupid beasts' ahead.
Chapter 7
The Rainbow's Daughter
Dorothy, the Shaggy Man, Button-Bright, and Toto encounter a beautiful, lost girl named Polychrome, the Daughter of the Rainbow, who has fallen from her father's rainbow and is stranded on the road. She joins their journey to the Emerald City in hopes of finding a way home.
Chapter 8
The City of Beasts
The travelers enjoy a picnic lunch, then continue their journey and encounter the city of Dunkiton, inhabited by donkeys. The donkeys initially make a terrible noise by kicking metal sheets to scare away foxes, but the Shaggy Man uses his switch to stop them. After explaining that Button-Bright is not a real fox, the donkeys become polite and agree to lead the group to their ruler, King Kik-a-bray.
Chapter 9
The Shaggy Man's Transformation
The travelers arrive in Dunkiton, a city of donkeys, where the Shaggy Man's flattery of King Kik-a-bray leads to his transformation into a donkey. The King explains that only the Truth Pond in Oz can reverse the spell. Dorothy promises to ask Ozma for an invitation to her birthday celebration in exchange for hospitality.
Chapter 10
VIII: The Musicker
The travelers encounter a peculiar little fat man named Allegro da Capo who produces music from his own body as he breathes. Despite the annoyance of his constant piping, they learn he cannot help it and is proud of his unique ability. After a brief interaction, they continue their journey toward the Land of Oz, leaving the musicker behind.
Chapter 11
IX: Facing the Scoodlers
The travelers traverse a rocky, barren plain and encounter the Scoodlers, two-faced creatures who threaten to make them into soup. Despite the Shaggy Man's attempt to use the Love Magnet, the Scoodlers prove hostile, throwing their heads at the group and blocking their path.
Chapter 12
X: Escaping the Soup-Kettle
Dorothy, Button-Bright, the Shaggy Man, Toto, and Polychrome are captured by the Scoodlers and taken to their cave, where a giant soup kettle awaits. The Shaggy Man uses the Love Magnet to claim the Scoodlers love him, but the Queen orders them made into soup. The Shaggy Man devises a plan: Polychrome slaps the guard, the Shaggy Man catches the thrown head in a sack, and they escape across the bridge. The Shaggy Man catches all the heads thrown by the pursuing Scoodlers and tosses them into a gulf, rendering the creatures harmless. The group returns to the road, safe from being made into soup.
Chapter 13
XI: Johnny Dooit Does It
The travelers, stranded at the edge of the Deadly Desert, are unable to cross due to the deadly sands. After a night of rest, Dorothy asks Polychrome if she can do magic, but she cannot. The Shaggy Man uses the Love Magnet to summon Johnny Dooit, a skilled worker who builds a sand-boat with sails and runners to carry them across the desert. Johnny Dooit works quickly with his magic tools, completes the boat, and then disappears.
Chapter 14
The Deadly Desert Crossed
The group crosses the Deadly Desert in a sand-boat built by Johnny Dooit, crashes into rocks on the other side, and lands safely in the Land of Oz, though the boat is destroyed. They then set out to find the Emerald City.
Chapter 15
XIII: The Truth Pond
Dorothy and her companions discover they are in the yellow Country of the Winkies, ruled by the Tin Woodman. They find a crystal pool called the Truth Pond, which restores Button-Bright and the Shaggy Man to their original human heads, curing the transformations inflicted by King Dox and King Kik-a-bray.
Chapter 16
Tik-Tok and Billina
Dorothy and her friends meet Tik-tok and Billina, who have been sent by Princess Ozma to welcome them. Billina shares her news of hatching ten chicks, and the group continues toward the Tin Woodman's castle, planning to attend Ozma's birthday celebration.
Chapter 17
The Emperor’s Tin Castle
Dorothy and her companions visit the Tin Woodman's new tin castle in the Winkie Country. They admire the tin statues, enjoy a grand dinner with tin dishes and a tin orchestra, and learn about Oz's moneyless society based on love and kindness. The Tin Woodman offers the Shaggy Man a chance to prove himself worthy of living in Oz.
Chapter 18
Visiting the Pumpkin-Field
Dorothy and her companions visit Jack Pumpkinhead's pumpkin field, where they learn about his unique existence and his practice of replacing his pumpkin head when it spoils. Jack invites them to Ozma's birthday celebration and promises to follow them to the Emerald City.
Chapter 19
The Royal Chariot Arrives
As the travelers approach the Emerald City, they pass through the prosperous Winkie Country and cross the boundary river. The Tin Woodman recounts the story of the Powder of Life and its unintended consequences, including a live bear rug. At a bridge, Dorothy reunites with the Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger, who have come to greet her, and introduces Polychrome to them.
Chapter 20
The Emerald City
Dorothy and her companions arrive at the Emerald City in Ozma's golden chariot, pulled by the Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger. They are awed by the city's splendor and welcomed by Jellia Jamb, who informs them of Ozma's upcoming birthday celebration. The shaggy man feels out of place but is reassured, and the group prepares to meet Ozma.
Chapter 21
The Shaggy Man's Welcome
The Shaggy Man is given luxurious apartments in Ozma's palace, where he bathes, dresses in fine shaggy clothes, and prepares to meet the Princess. Meanwhile, Dorothy dresses herself and Button-Bright and goes to the drawing-room to greet Ozma.
Chapter 22
Princess Ozma of Oz
Dorothy and her friends arrive at the Emerald City and are welcomed by Princess Ozma. Ozma reveals she orchestrated the mix-up of roads to bring Dorothy to her birthday celebration. The Shaggy Man confesses he stole the Love Magnet, but after bathing in the Truth Pond, he decides to give it up. The group enjoys a grand dinner and a magic show by the Wizard, and Ozma announces the upcoming birthday festivities.
Chapter 23
Dorothy Receives the Guests
Dorothy hosts a breakfast for her traveling companions, then receives guests in the Throne-Room on behalf of Ozma. The Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, Cowardly Lion, Hungry Tiger, and others gather. Distinguished visitors arrive, including King John Dough, Chick the Cherub, and Para Bruin, bringing birthday gifts for Ozma.

Important Arrivals
A grand procession of distinguished guests arrives at the Emerald City for Ozma's birthday celebration, including King Dox of Foxville, Queen Zixi of Ix, King Bud of Noland, Princess Fluff, Santa Claus with his Ryls and Knooks, the Queen of Merryland, the Candy Man, the Braided Man, and the royal family of Ev. The chapter highlights the joyous reunions and the growing excitement for the evening's banquet.
Chapter 25
The Grand Banquet
Ozma hosts a magnificent birthday banquet in the palace's great dining-hall, attended by a dazzling array of guests including Santa Claus, John Dough, Queen Zixi, King Bud, and many others. The animals have their own table, and the evening is filled with feasting, entertainment, and performances such as the Wizard's pie trick, Polychrome's Rainbow Dance, the Tin Woodman's love song, and drills by the wooden soldiers. The celebration concludes with laughter and merriment, setting the stage for the next day's birthday festivities.
Chapter 26
The Birthday Celebration
Princess Ozma's birthday celebration is a grand affair in the Emerald City, featuring a magnificent procession, performances by notable Oz figures, and magical entertainments. The chapter concludes with the departure of guests via bubbles or other means, and Dorothy returns to Kansas with Toto using the Magic Belt.
