While sleeping under a tree, they are discovered by two tramps they had previously beaten, who recognize Billy as a wanted man and plan to inform the police.

One Turn Deserves Another
Billy Byrne and Bridge return to the farmhouse where Billy had earlier bought food, only to find two tramps who have discovered the farmer's wife's hidden money and are attempting to rob and murder her. Billy intervenes, rescues the woman, and returns her money. The woman, Mrs. Shorter, learns that Billy is wanted as an escaped murderer but, grateful for his help, hides him and Bridge from the police. After the police leave, Mr. Shorter drives them to Dodson, where they board a train heading south.

Detective Sergeant Flannagan tracks Billy Byrne to El Paso, where Billy and Bridge plan to cross into Mexico. Flannagan confronts them in a saloon, but Billy escapes by throwing beer in his face and shooting out a light in a back room. The two then flee on foot into the arid landscape.

In Pesita’s Camp
Billy, Bridge, and Miguel are brought before General Pesita, who initially mistakes Billy for a non-American due to his slang. Billy agrees to serve as a captain in Pesita's army in exchange for the release of Bridge and Miguel. Pesita secretly plots with Captain Rozales to have Bridge and Miguel killed during their escort, but Miguel overhears and warns them.

Billy and Eddie Shorter take cover in a canyon, where Eddie is mortally wounded. Billy single-handedly fights off a group of Pimans, but Eddie dies. Billy then returns to the village at night, searching for Barbara.
