Chapter 1

Chapter 5
V: No Word from the Chums
After surviving a violent storm, Frank and Joe Hardy return home to find their father, Mr. Hardy, departing for Chicago to pursue the criminal Baldy Turk. Mrs. Hardy expresses deep anxiety about the danger of the case. The next day, the boys go to check on their friends Chet Morton and Biff Hooper, who had sailed into the storm instead of turning back. At the reef, they find wreckage but no sign of the missing boys. While examining the wreckage, the Sleuth is caught in a strong current and drifts dangerously close to the rocks.

After a fruitless search for Chet and Biff, the Hardy boys return home to Bayport, where the community mourns the missing boys as lost. Aunt Gertrude intercepts a ransom letter addressed to Fenton Hardy, claiming his sons have been kidnapped and demanding $5,000, the dropping of evidence in a bank robbery case, and the end of pursuit of Baldy Turk. The family debates whether it is a hoax or a ploy to distract Mr. Hardy from his mission in Chicago.

IX: Blacksnake Island
The Hardy boys deduce that Chet and Biff may have been kidnapped in mistake for them, based on the ransom letter and the gang's earlier surveillance. They learn from Phil Cohen that Biff had wanted to visit Blacksnake Island, prompting a new search plan. Meanwhile, Mrs. Hardy's telegrams to Mr. Hardy in Chicago fail to reach him, raising concerns about his safety.

The Hardy boys lead Chet and Biff in a daring escape from the gangsters' cave. Navigating in pitch darkness, they reach the woods trail but become separated when Chet and Biff take a wrong fork. Frank and Joe make it to their motorboat, the Sleuth, under heavy gunfire, and successfully escape the cove. Realizing the gangsters will pursue by boat, Frank decides to head toward the hidden gang motorboats instead of the open sea.
Chapter 20
Seizing the Boats
Frank and Joe Hardy execute a daring plan to steal the gangsters' motorboats, towing them out to sea to maroon the criminals on Blacksnake Island. After successfully seizing the boats under gunfire, they encounter Tony Prito, Jerry Gilroy, and Phil Cohen in the Napoli. They delegate the captured boats to their friends for patrol duty while they head to the mainland for help, leaving Chet and Biff in hiding on the island.
Chapter 21
At the Island
Chet Morton and Biff Hooper realize they have become separated from Frank and Joe Hardy while fleeing through the dark island. They hear gunfire and the motorboat leaving, then hide on a hillside. After spotting a slow-moving boat, they attempt to approach the shore but are confronted by two gangsters, including Pete. Biff knocks one unconscious with a punch, and Chet trips the other over a ledge. They escape into a thicket, but as dawn breaks they hear searchers approaching and discover a blacksnake coiled at their feet.

The Hardy boys return home to Bayport after rescuing Chet and Biff and capturing the gang on Blacksnake Island.
