XIX: Captain Ramón Apologizes

The Whipping
Fray Felipe is publicly whipped for striking a man in the plaza, and Don Diego witnesses the brutal punishment. Afterward, Don Diego confides in his servant Bernardo about his desire to leave the pueblo and his failed courtship of Lolita Pulido. He then encounters the wounded Fray Felipe on the road, who laments the persecution of the missions. Don Diego expresses his wish to be a man of action, but continues to play the part of a fop.
Chapter 21
Swift Punishment
Señor Zorro intercepts the dealer who swindled Fray Felipe and had him whipped. He forces the dealer and his assistant out of their cart, exposes their lies, and beats them with a mule whip as punishment for their perjury and cruelty. Later, at the tavern, the dealer boasts about the whipping and spends the stolen money, while Don Diego Vega is dismissed as harmless. As the dealer and his assistant travel toward San Gabriel, Zorro confronts them again on the road.

XXIII: More Punishment
Señor Zorro punishes the corrupt magistrado by having him whipped at the post, then forces the landlord and peons to administer the lashes. When the landlord tries to betray him to caballeros inside the tavern, Zorro fights them off and whips the landlord as well before escaping.

XXIV: At the Hacienda of Don Alejandro
Don Diego returns to his father's hacienda, complaining of the turmoil caused by Señor Zorro. He recounts the whipping of Fray Felipe and the pursuit of the highwayman. Don Alejandro urges his son to be more spirited and to win the hand of Lolita Pulido, threatening to disinherit him if he does not marry within a quarter year.

The Outrage
Governor's soldiers arrest Don Carlos Pulido, his wife Doña Catalina, and their daughter Lolita on charges of treason and aiding enemies of the state. The family is paraded through the pueblo in a carreta, jeered by a mob incited by the governor, and thrown into the foul common jail. Despite the humiliation, the Pulidos maintain their pride, while onlookers—some sympathetic—wonder if Señor Zorro will intervene.

Don Diego Vega visits the governor at the presidio, feigning concern over the imprisonment of Don Carlos Pulido and his family while subtly probing the governor's intentions. XXXIV: The Blood of the Pulidos
Sergeant Gonzales and his troopers search Fray Felipe's house for Lolita Pulido. When they discover her hiding behind bales of hides, she threatens to stab herself with a knife rather than return to prison. Gonzales hesitates, and Lolita forces them to let her leave, then escapes on Gonzales's horse after Fray Felipe trips the soldiers to buy her time.

XXXV: The Clash of Blades Again
Señor Zorro evades pursuit, then infiltrates the presidio to capture Captain Ramón. He forces the captain to confess his lies before the governor, then engages him in a duel and kills him with a thrust through the heart, leaving the Mark of Zorro on his brow.
Chapter 35
All Against Them
Señor Zorro finds himself surrounded by three detachments of soldiers at dawn. He attempts to escape across the plaza but is cut off at every turn. Lolita Pulido, who had escaped from Fray Felipe's, rides to his side pursued by troopers. Together they break through the cordon, but her horse collapses at the tavern door. Zorro carries her inside, bars the door, and they prepare to fight to the death rather than be captured.

The Fox at Bay
Zorro and Lolita are trapped inside a building surrounded by the governor's troops. As the soldiers batter the door, Zorro fights back with pistol and blade, wounding several attackers. Lolita declares her love and willingness to die with him, asking only to see his face before the end. Just as the door is about to give way, a sudden commotion outside halts the attack.

The caballeros confront the governor, demanding justice and a pardon for Señor Zorro. Don Alejandro Vega stands with them, forcing the governor to agree. Zorro reveals himself as Don Diego Vega, to the shock and joy of all.

Don Diego Vega reveals his secret identity as Señor Zorro to a crowd of troopers, natives, and caballeros, explaining how he feigned languor for ten years while secretly training to become the Curse of Capistrano. He recounts key moments of deception, including his fights with Sergeant Gonzales and his courtship of Lolita Pulido. Lolita accepts both his identities, and Don Diego vows to retire Zorro and marry her.
