Tab discovers his flat has been burgled, with Rex Lander's trunk broken into. Inspector Carver suspects the burglar may be Jesse Trasmere's murderer, citing instinct. Later, Ursula Ardfern visits, claiming Stone Cottage is haunted by a mysterious man in black, and she plans to return to the Central Hotel. Tab agrees to visit Stone Cottage.
