Chapter 1
I

Yeh Ling then dispatches a servant to discreetly follow Trasmere, a routine he has performed for six years.

Tab Holland and Rex Lander discuss Rex's miserly uncle, Jesse Trasmere, revealing his eccentric habits and wealth. Later, Tab encounters Trasmere on the street and helps translate a Chinese proclamation. That evening, Tab interviews actress Ursula Ardfern to investigate a false rumor about her impending marriage, noting her jewelry and her dismissal of the rumor.

Upon arrival, Rex rushes out in terror. They find a narrow passage leading to a vault; through a ventilator, Tab sees Jesse Trasmere dead on the floor.

Tab Holland and Inspector Carver investigate the locked vault where Jesse Trasmere has been found dead. They discover that the key to the vault is stained with blood, ruling out suicide. Rex Lander recounts his arrival at the house and his encounter with the agitated valet Walters. Carver finds evidence that Walters was making a duplicate key. The will leaves everything to Rex Lander. Wellington Brown's gloves are found at the scene, making him a suspect. The vault is eventually opened, revealing Trasmere's body shot in the back.

Mr. Stott observes two Chinese men at the house but decides to keep silent, fearing Chinese vengeance. The chapter ends with Yeh Ling's secret visit to retrieve a lacquer box containing a note from him.

Later, Tab learns more about Yeh Ling from Jacques, the news editor. After a week of boredom, Tab returns home late one night to find his lights on and doors open, suggesting an intruder, marking the beginning of what Inspector Carver calls 'The Second Activity.'
