What happens
Dutch sea-captain Jean Cornelissen, separated from his fleet near the Cape of Good Hope, discovers Simplicissimus' island. His crew plunders the hermit's dwelling, then tracks Simplicissimus to a cavern where supernatural events occur—lights go out, an earthquake strikes, and the plunderers go mad. Simplicissimus appears, rebukes them, and instructs them to cure the madmen with plum kernels. He refuses to return to Europe, recovers his stolen book, and accepts rebuilt shelter and supplies before the crew departs.
