XII explained

Hume and Vye prepare for a rescue mission to intercept Wass and his men before they reach the mountain valley.

What happens

Hume and Vye prepare for a rescue mission to intercept Wass and his men before they reach the mountain valley. After a failed aerial search, they set a watch at the gap. Back at camp, Hume faces opposition from Chambriss and Rovald, but Yactisi and Starns help secure the coms and disarm Rovald. Hume and Vye set out alone to stop Wass, while Vye reflects on his past as a state child and Hume promises to back his victim compensation claim.

Vye's past as a state child and his choice of port-drift over conditioning highlight his struggle to maintain identity and survive.

  • Deception and Trust

Hume and Yactisi's exchange about truth and hidden motives underscores the theme of trust amidst deception.

Key passages

  • You can claim victim compensation, you know.” Vye was silent, but Hume did not let him remain so. “When the Patrol arrives, you put in your claim. I’ll back you.” “You can’t.” “That’s where you’re mistaken,” Hume told him crisply. “I’ve already taped a full story back at the spacer—it’s on record now.”

Hume insists that Vye can file for victim compensation when the Patrol arrives and promises to support his claim, revealing he has already recorded a statement.

Hume's commitment to Vye's future and his willingness to face legal consequences.

  • “I have some experience with coms, Hunter. Do you wish me to send your message and take over the unit until you return? I gather,” he added with a certain delicacy, “that it will not be expedient for your gearman to engage in that duty now.”

Starns offers to handle the communication equipment and send the Patrol message, noting that Rovald cannot be trusted for the task.

Starns' diplomatic offer to assist while sidelining Rovald.

  • “Who are you?” His voice was soft but carried a snap. For the first time Vye saw the tall, lean civ really smile. “A man of many interests, Hunter—shall we let it go at that for the present? Though I assure you that Wass is not one of them in the way you might believe.”

Hume asks Yactisi directly about his identity, and Yactisi cryptically replies that he has many interests but not the kind Hume suspects regarding Wass.

Yactisi's mysterious nature and the tension of hidden motives.
