Chapter 1
I
Ras Hume meets with the criminal mastermind Milfors Wass to propose a scheme: using a conditioned impostor to claim the Kogan estate by faking survival from the Largo Drift crash on Jumala. Hume selects a boy with no ties, and Wass agrees to supply Jumala memory tapes and arrange a safari to 'discover' the claimant.
Chapter 2
II
Vye Lansor, a state child and swamper at the Starfall, is recruited by Out-Hunter Ras Hume, who drugs him and delivers him to Milfors Wass's organization to be transformed into Rynch Brodie, heir to a fortune. The chapter contrasts the squalor of the Starfall with Hume's calculated manipulation.
Chapter 3
III
Rynch Brodie awakens with a headache and fragmented memories, struggling to reconcile his identity as a castaway on Jumala with strange, intrusive visions of a room, a man, and a cup. He hunts and survives in the wilderness, but his sense of self is increasingly undermined by alien influences. Meanwhile, Ras Hume lands with a group of clients, including Gentlehomo Starns, and a gearman sent by Milfors Wass, to orchestrate a scheme involving the abandoned L-B and the castaway, whom Hume has planted with subconscious commands.
Chapter 4
IV
The safari camp is established on Jumala, and Hume leads the clients in setting up. Around the fire, Starns questions Hume about the verifier and the assurance of no intelligent native life. Hume, Rovald, and the clients discuss hunting plans, with undercurrents of tension about a hidden agenda involving Brodie. Starns spots a flash of light in the woods, which Hume dismisses as a bird or reflection, but it raises suspicion. That night, an alien force probes the camp's barrier but is repelled, and it begins marshaling creatures for a new assault at dawn.
Chapter 5
V
Rynch Brodie, having fled from the landing party, hides in the trees and observes the alien creatures that surround the survivor's camp. He attempts to find a detour to rejoin the humans, but encounters a water-cat attack and a strong-jaws trap. He ultimately captures the stranger from the spacer camp, taking his needler and demanding they talk.
Chapter 6
VI
Rynch confronts Hume, who reveals that Rynch was brain-channeled and planted on Jumala as part of a scheme involving a billion credits. Rynch refuses to play along, but after saving Hume from scavengers, they are surrounded by mysterious alien beings, forcing a tense standoff.
Chapter 7
VII
Rynch and Hume take refuge on an islet in the river, pursued by alien blue beasts and strange glowing lights. They fight off a wave of aquatic creatures driven by the lights, and are rescued by a flitter that blasts the attackers. Rynch reflects on his false identity and Hume's plan.
Chapter 8
VIII
Vye Lansor, imprisoned aboard Milfors Wass's spacer, is freed by Ras Hume in a risky escape plan. After locking Peake in a storage cabin and using a flare pak to distract the camp, Vye and Hume flee in a flitter. They are pursued by alien lights that disrupt the flitter's engine, forcing them toward the mountains. Hume warns the safari camp via com unit, but their escape remains uncertain.
Chapter 9
The Trap Springs
Hume and Vye discover they are trapped in a sinister valley by an invisible barrier. They encounter a starving water-cat and a tusked monster, killing the latter with a ray tube. Forced to ration supplies and find shelter, they debate the nature of the trap and their slim chances of escape, with Hume insisting they still have a chance as long as they are alive.
Chapter 10
The Barrier and the Lake
Vye returns to the valley after breaking through the barrier, only to find it has reappeared, trapping him and Hume again. He recounts his journey to the lake, where he discovers an artificial structure beneath the water and narrowly escapes attacks from hostile creatures. The chapter explores themes of survival, sacrifice, and the mysterious forces controlling the valley.
Chapter 11
XI
Vye and Hume escape the valley prison, discover an artificial structure beneath the lake, and respond to a distress call from Wass's camp, which they find deserted.
Chapter 12
XII
Hume and Vye prepare for a rescue mission to intercept Wass and his men before they reach the mountain valley. After a failed aerial search, they set a watch at the gap. Back at camp, Hume faces opposition from Chambriss and Rovald, but Yactisi and Starns help secure the coms and disarm Rovald. Hume and Vye set out alone to stop Wass, while Vye reflects on his past as a state child and Hume promises to back his victim compensation claim.
Chapter 13
XIII
Vye Lansor is questioned by a Patrol officer about his experiences on Jumala, but refuses to make a tape recording. Ras Hume reveals that the entire operation was a setup orchestrated by the Patrol to capture Milfors Wass, with Hume acting as bait. Hume offers Vye a chance to claim victim compensation from Wass's assets and suggests a future with the Guild. The chapter also recounts the aftermath of the alien attack, where Wass is driven mad by the barrier and Vye and Hume survive.
