What happens
Calliope Catesby, a notorious troublemaker in Quicksand, engages in a violent shootout with the city marshal and his posse. During the chaos, his mother arrives by train, unaware of his criminal reputation. To spare her feelings, Calliope swaps identities with the wounded marshal, Buck Patterson, pretending to be the lawman. Patterson, moved by the mother's love and Calliope's sudden reformation, allows the ruse to continue, appointing Calliope as marshal for as long as his mother stays.
