What happens
Kathleen O'Malley, a happy young Irish woman engaged to Fergus O'Hollihan, becomes distressed when she sees Fergus with William K. Meeks, a member of the Young Men's Christian Association. Fergus begins to change, growing morose and pale, and is lured by Meeks into drinking water at the association's hall. Fergus becomes addicted to water, but ultimately breaks free during a meeting, rushes home, and returns to his old self by drinking whiskey, reuniting with Kathleen.
