What happens

Vanning awakens after the crash to find Zeeth and the others alive, though injured. He observes the Swamja city through the visiplate and realizes his plan worked: the North-Fever virus has been released within the city, driving the Swamja north toward the lava pits. Zeeth informs him that Callahan has fled toward Venus Landing. Vanning resolves to organize the slaves and head south for help.
