Vanning, recovering from the North-Fever, reveals to his fellow prisoners—Hobbs, Sanderson, and the Venusian Zeeth—that he is a detective hunting the fugitive Don Callahan, who has surgically altered his appearance. He suspects one of them is Callahan. The group is forced to attend a Swamja religious ceremony in an amphitheater with a mysterious black pool. When the slave Lysla accidentally spills a drink on a Swamja and is about to be killed, Vanning intervenes, sparking a revolt. Sanderson joins the fight, and Vanning and Lysla attempt to escape.

“On impulse, Vanning took out the makeup kit and held it up. “I found this under the shelves. Yours, Hobbs? Or Sanderson?” Both men shook their heads, frowning. ““I’m wondering something. When did you boys get here?” It was the mild-faced Hobbs who answered. “A couple of weeks ago, I believe. Within a few days of each other. Just before you arrived, in fact. But we recovered long before you did. It was only a miracle that saved your life, Vanning.””
Vanning inquires about the arrival times of the other prisoners, and Hobbs explains they all came shortly before Vanning, who was near death.

““One of you three is Callahan.” Zeeth, the Venusian native, said softly, “I do not think the usual laws hold good here.” Sanderson roared with laughter. “Damn right! You expect to arrest your man and ask the Swamja to imprison him for you?””

““Jerry—” Her voice was choked. “Oh, no!” Abruptly a crash sounded from above. Vanning looked up to see Sanderson swinging his metal tray like a maniac. The man’s red hair was like a beacon in the strange light. He drove his weapon into the snarling face of a Swamja and yelled down at Vanning: “Amscray! There’s an oorday on your eftlay!””
As Vanning grabs the gun, Sanderson attacks a Swamja with his tray and shouts in Pig-Latin to escape through a door on the left.
Sanderson joins the revolt, aiding Vanning's escape.
