Rudy Hartman, a drunken scientist, prepares a blacked-out spaceship for a secret mission. Saul Duncan, a convict pilot, and Brent Olcott, the mastermind, plan to intercept the 'Maid of Mercury' to steal radium and rescue Andrea Duncan. Duncan forces Olcott and Hartman to accompany him into space, taking control of the ship. Meanwhile, Andrea Duncan, aboard the 'Maid,' contemplates her role in the plan, aware of the danger from Plutonian mind-vampires without a Varra Helmet.
