Eccles is a suspect, but Holmes encourages him to recount his tale: he met Garcia weeks earlier, was invited to stay, and experienced a peculiar evening with the household, including a cryptic note. Holmes begins to deduce that Eccles was likely used as an alibi for a criminal plot.

Through a clever advertisement, they lure a suspect, who turns out to be Colonel Valentine Walter, the brother of the late Sir James Walter, head of the Submarine Department.

Holmes later reveals the entire charade was a ruse to lure the murderer, Mr. Culverton Smith, into confessing to the murder of Victor Savage and the attempted murder of Holmes himself. Holmes had feigned illness using makeup and fasting, and Smith is arrested.
