Chapter 1
I: Beside the Roaring Iller-Stream
Cornelli lives happily with her father, housekeeper Miss Mina, cook Esther, and her beloved old nurse Martha. She enjoys walks with Martha, who often speaks of Cornelli's deceased mother. Her father announces that his cousin Miss Kitty Dorner and her friend Miss Grideelen will come to stay for the summer to oversee Cornelli's education. Cornelli is unhappy about the change. She helps Martha write a letter and later mails a letter from her father to his cousin.

II: Up in the Top Story
Mr. Schaller, the guardian, visits Mrs. Halm and advises her to steer her children toward practical trades rather than the arts. He meets Mux, who wants to be a general, and later encounters Agnes, who is upset by the news. The family gathers for a tense midday meal, where the children react with dismay to the guardian's proposals. Dino remains cheerful despite his mother's worries about his health.

Dino meets Cornelli at Martha's cottage, but Cornelli's behavior is withdrawn and hostile. She runs away after Dino tries to help with her hair. Later, Cornelli struggles with her new disciplined life under Miss Dorner's supervision, feeling isolated and unhappy. Martha receives a letter from a rector's widow about sending her son Dino to stay, but Cornelli rejects the idea of a new playmate.

VI: A Friend Is Found
Cornelli has not visited Martha's cottage for days, causing Martha grief and anxiety. Martha visits the Hellmut residence to inquire about Cornelli and learns from Esther that Cornelli has become withdrawn and unhappy. Later, Dino finds Cornelli in the stable and tries to befriend her, but Cornelli is resistant and expresses deep despair about her appearance and loneliness. Dino offers his friendship and helps her, but Cornelli remains troubled. The chapter ends with Cornelli crying after Dino leaves and the cousins discussing her worsening behavior.

VII: A New Sorrow
Mr. Hellmut, distressed by Cornelli's stubbornness and despair, seeks advice from Martha, who suggests patience and love over harsh discipline. Cousin Dorner advocates for sending Cornelli to a boarding school to break her will, and Mr. Hellmut reluctantly agrees. Cornelli visits the Halm household, where Mrs. Halm kindly persuades her father to let her stay for the day. Cornelli returns home to Iller-Stream with Mrs. Halm and her children, having been transformed by her time in town. Her father is overjoyed at the change in her, and she credits her mother for helping her. The family visits Martha, who is deeply moved by Cornelli's new happiness and Dino's return. Mr. Hellmut later invites the Halm family to stay for the summer, and the children look forward to their time in the countryside. Matthew has built a goat cart for Cornelli, and Mr. Hellmut buys Martha's cottage as a gift.
