Chapter 1
A Christmas Carol
Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly and cold-hearted man, is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley, who warns him that his selfishness will lead to a miserable afterlife. Marley tells Scrooge he will be visited by three spirits who will offer him a chance to change his ways.
Chapter 2
Stave I: Marley's Ghost
On Christmas Eve, the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley. Marley, bound in heavy chains forged during his lifetime, warns Scrooge that he will be haunted by three spirits who offer him a chance to avoid a similar fate. After the ghost departs, Scrooge sees other tormented spirits in the air and, shaken, goes to bed.
Chapter 3
Stave II: The First of the Three Spirits
The Ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge on a journey through his own history, showing him his lonely childhood at school, his apprenticeship with Fezziwig, and the painful dissolution of his engagement to Belle due to his growing obsession with wealth. Scrooge is deeply moved and struggles with the Spirit before finally forcing it to disappear.
Chapter 4
Stave III: The Second of the Three Spirits
The Ghost of Christmas Present takes Scrooge to observe the Cratchit family's humble Christmas celebration, where Tiny Tim's frailty and the family's love are on full display. Later, they visit Fred's lively party, where Scrooge begins to soften and join in the merriment. The spirit then reveals two allegorical children, Ignorance and Want, warning Scrooge of their danger, before vanishing as the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come approaches.
Chapter 5
Stave IV: The Last of the Spirits
The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, a silent and terrifying phantom, leads Scrooge through visions of a future where he has died unmourned. Businessmen casually discuss his death, and Scrooge witnesses the Cratchit family grieving the loss of Tiny Tim. Finally, the Spirit shows Scrooge his own neglected grave, prompting a desperate plea for redemption and a promise to change his ways.
Chapter 6
Stave V: The End of It
Scrooge awakens on Christmas morning, overjoyed to find he has a second chance. He sends a large turkey to the Cratchits, donates generously to charity, attends Fred's Christmas dinner, and raises Bob Cratchit's salary, becoming a transformed man.
