Heathcliff dies after nights of restless seeking for Cathy; the second generation — young Cathy and Hareton — remain at the Heights in a quieter bond of teaching and mutual softening. Lockwood revisits and finds a household no longer organized by Heathcliff’s war. Ghost rumor still lingers on the moor, but the plot’s violence has exhausted itself.
