Chapter 1
Uller Uprising

Chapter 4
Prologue
On the toxic planet Niflheim, a team of human miners and scientists, including Dr. Lourenço Gomes and Dr. Juan Murillo, prepare to detonate nuclear bombs to trigger volcanic eruptions for metal extraction. The chapter introduces the harsh environment, the specialized equipment required for survival, and the presence of an Ulleran worker named Gorkrink, who assists the team. The detonation is successful, and the team celebrates their achievement as the first A-bomb miners in history.
Chapter 5
Commander-in-Chief Front and Center
General von Schlichten oversees anti-cannibal operations and reflects on the harshness of Uller. While returning to Konkrook, he spots a riot where Terrans are being mobbed by natives. He and his staff intervene, rescuing a wounded older man and a young woman, using force to disperse the attackers.

II: Rakkeed, Stalin, and the Rev. Keeluk
General von Schlichten, Governor Harrington, and Lieutenant-Governor Blount discuss the aftermath of a riot and the disappearance of Harrington's dog, Stalin, which was hidden by Rev. Keeluk. They debate the influence of the prophet Rakkeed, the political maneuvering of Gurgurk and King Orgzild, and the potential threat of an uprising. Von Schlichten reveals intelligence on Keeluk's letters to anti-Terran Skilkans, and Harrington suggests von Schlichten accompany ERA member Paula Quinton to Skilk to influence her views. General von Schlichten and Colonel Paula Quinton fly over Kraggork Swamp, discussing the sociographic inaccuracies in Stanley-Browne's book, the evolutionary history of Uller, the unique biology and culture of the Kragans, and the linguistic differences that shape their worldview. They visit King Kankad, who expresses a desire for friendship and peace between Terrans and Kragans.

VI: The Bad News Came After the Coffee
During a dinner at Skilk, General von Schlichten and other officers discuss the unsettling quiet among the natives, the influence of the prophet Rakkeed, and the technological and cultural achievements of the Kragans. The chapter ends with the shocking news that Governor Sidney Harrington has died suddenly.
Chapter 11
VII: Bismillah! How Dumb Can We Get?
Governor Harrington is poisoned by a servant loyal to Rev. Keeluk, who had been testing poisons on terrestrial animals. A mutiny by the Tenth North Uller Native Infantry and Fifth Cavalry erupts, but loyal Kragan troops under von Schlichten suppress the uprising. Von Schlichten coordinates defenses and learns of Harrington's death via visiscreen from General M'zangwe.

General von Schlichten assumes the role of Governor-General after the deaths of Harrington and Blount, facing a planet-wide Ulleran uprising. XI: Of Princedoms Which Have Been Won by Conquest
General von Schlichten leads a direct assault on the palace of King Firkked in Skilk, culminating in a personal duel where he kills Firkked with sword and bayonet. After the victory, he ceremonially presents the Spear of Skilk to King Jonkvank, fulfilling his promise to make Jonkvank the new ruler, while advising Jonkvank on how to consolidate power through swift, just executions and religious legitimacy.

XIV: The Reviewers Panned Hell Out of It
General von Schlichten wakes late after a restless night and learns that the Northern Lights has arrived with four of King Yoorkerk's infantry regiments. The Terran forces are consolidating their position in Konkrook, while resistance weakens. A breakthrough occurs when Dr. Pickering discovers that a trashy historical novel, Dire Dawn by Hildegarde Hernandez, contains authentic blueprints and data for building an atomic bomb, based on research from the University of Montevideo Library. The team begins constructing bombs using liquid-oxygen flasks as casings. Meanwhile, the Gaucho engages and destroys the Jan Smuts with a rocket salvo, confirming the enemy has atomic weapons. Von Schlichten orders promotions for the Gaucho's crew and accelerates bomb production.
Chapter 19
A Place in My Heart for Hildegarde
General von Schlichten leads a bombing mission against Keegark using an untested nuclear bomb aboard the gun-cutter Elmoran, accompanied by Kent Pickering and Paula Quinton, despite protests. The bomb, named 'Dire Dawn by Hildegarde Hernandez,' obliterates the city, prompting von Schlichten to reflect on the horrors of nuclear warfare and the need for a Terran Pax on Uller.
