Super-Ship in Action explained

Doctor Frederick Rodebush and Lyman Cleveland test Triplanetary's new inertialess super-ship, enduring severe vertigo during their first jump.

What happens

Doctor Frederick Rodebush and Lyman Cleveland test Triplanetary's new inertialess super-ship, enduring severe vertigo during their first jump. They find themselves two light-years from Earth and confirm that only four hours have passed, not years. After successful trials, they receive an urgent call from Virgil Samms to return to Pittsburgh, which is under attack by a Nevian vessel. They race back, but upon arrival they discover the ship is damaged and must land on a strange planet for repairs. After repairs, Rodebush detects Roger's presence rebuilding his planetoid.

Rodebush and Cleveland overcome severe physical and mental torture from inertialess travel through sheer willpower, highlighting the triumph of mind over body.

  • Sacrifice for the Greater Good

The crew endures extreme discomfort and risk to test the super-ship, essential for defending Earth against alien threats.

Characters to notice

  • Fred Rodebush

Pilots the super-ship, endures inertialess vertigo, and makes the critical discovery of Roger's activity.

  • Lyman Cleveland

Co-pilot and engineer, assists in testing the ship and communicating with Samms.

  • Virgil Samms

Contacts the ship urgently, reporting the Nevian attack on Pittsburgh.

  • Roger

Detected by Rodebush rebuilding his planetoid near the strange world.

Key passages

Rodebush announces the imminent test launch of the Boise and asks Cleveland if he is prepared.

Sets the stage for the first inertialess flight.

  • We aren't traveling at all— now.

Rodebush explains that after the jump, the ship is stationary relative to Earth because inertia was neutralized.

Clarifies the mechanics of inertialess travel.

  • Thank God you're alive, and twice that that the ship works!

Samms expresses relief that the crew survived and the ship is functional.

Highlights the urgency of the Nevian attack.
