This chapter introduces Rantaine, a man of dubious background and many disguises, who was once rescued and befriended by Lethierry. Rantaine later betrayed Lethierry by absconding with half of Lethierry's savings, prompting Lethierry to invest his remaining fortune in building the first steam vessel to connect the Channel Islands with the French coast.
