What happens
The narrator is subjected to a terrifying examination by the Dwellers, who rebuild bodies using parts from the dead. After a failed attempt to communicate telepathically, he is plunged into a white light that transforms his body, leaving him hairless and disfigured. He is then released at the request of the Amphibians, who have helped the Dwellers in a battle on the Grey Beaches. The narrator is handed over to the Seekers of Wisdom, where he spends many months being interrogated about his own civilization, defending it while grappling with their contempt and his own doubts about humanity's failures.
