The wild geese, following the advice of a wise gray goose, decide to travel to Öland to evade Smirre Fox. During the journey, they encounter a mist that disorients them, and other birds play tricks to lead them astray. Nils experiences dizziness and a sense of unreality, mistaking the sea for the sky, until gunshots from hunters remind him of the dangers of the real world.
