What happens
Nils and the wild geese arrive at Öland's southern point, where thick mist covers the island. Nils braids a knapsack from sedge to collect mussels, but becomes anxious when Morten Goosey-Gander repeatedly disappears. Searching the shore, Ottenby estate, and the sheep meadow, Nils discovers that the goosey-gander has been visiting a wounded young gray goose named Dunfin, whom he has been caring for. Nils secretly sets Dunfin's wing, and when the flock departs, Morten initially follows but then turns back for Dunfin, only to find her healed and ready to join them.
