They see the gallows called 'The Dry Tree' and learn that four woodmen are to be hanged the next day. Roger speaks with the gate captain, claiming to be a masterless man seeking to join the Burg's host, and is allowed to stay as Ralph's servant. Ralph later goes out alone to explore the town.
