Chapter 4

Ross Murdock, having been recaptured after his escape attempt with Kurt Vogel, is given a second chance by Major Kelgarries and Ashe. He learns that the time travel technology described by Kurt is real, and he is offered a trial run to Bronze Age Britain as his graduation exercise. Ross accepts, and the chapter details his training in primitive skills, languages, and customs, as well as his growing respect for Ashe.
Chapter 5
V
Ross and Ashe, disguised as Beaker traders, travel to Bronze Age Britain via a time transition and a disguised submarine. They discover Outpost Gog has been destroyed by an explosion, likely by Red agents. They investigate the ruins and head to Nodren's village to seek answers, with Ashe using his trader alias Assha.

Chapter 7
VII
Ross captures Lal, who had been sent to hunt the traders for Lurgha, and frees McNeil. They return to the cave where Ashe interrogates Lal, learning that Lal is a follower of the Great Mother and was motivated by a desire for treasure. Ashe sends Lal away with a white wolf skin as a gift for the Mother. Later, Ashe meets Cassca in a hidden valley and learns that Lurgha's bird came from the northeast, suggesting the Baltic. McNeil recounts how the Reds destroyed the hill post, likely by pinpointing its signal.
Chapter 8
VIII
Ross, Ashe, and McNeil undergo intense training for a new mission after the destruction of Outpost Gog. They receive a fix on a Red base near the Baltic Sea and parachute into the region, posing as Beaker traders. The team establishes a camp and prepares to locate the enemy's primary time base.
Chapter 9

Ross, McNeil, and Ashe continue their cover as Beaker traders, gathering intelligence from local hunters. Ashe reports a Beaker camp was wiped out and a taboo 'ghost' territory in the mountains. After their own camp is attacked, they escape toward the river. Ross later follows a trail into the forbidden mountains, discovers a fortified town with Beaker-like inhabitants, and is captured by a rope trap.
Chapter 10
The Prisoner and the Strange Village
Ross Murdock, captured and interrogated by a man dressed as a Beaker trader, maintains his cover as Rossa, a Beaker merchant. He recaptures a prisoner and explores the facility, encountering more mysteries and a sense of déjà vu.

Summoning his will to survive, he climbs out and stumbles upon a mysterious globe-shaped structure. He awakens in an alien environment, realizing he has made the final time jump.

They plan to reach the river for submarine contact. Later, Ross is captured and imprisoned, but Ashe and McNeil tunnel into his cell during an attack, revealing they are inside a glacier and have been collaborating with the enemy while using hidden gadgets.
Chapter 14
XIV
Ross, McNeil, and the feverish Ashe build a raft to escape the approaching ax people. After a river accident, Ross is separated from the others and washed ashore alone. In a cave, Ashe reveals his theory that the globe-ship is an alien spacecraft, suggesting that ancient earthworks may have been SOS signals from space castaways. They witness tribes fleeing the ax people invasion and struggle to complete their raft before the invaders arrive.
Chapter 15

Ross, alone and believing Ashe and McNeil dead after their raft broke up, struggles with despair but forces himself to keep moving. He is captured by a tall, fair-haired tribe of horsemen and brought before their chieftain Foscar. Forced to fight Ennar in a trial of strength, Ross uses dirty tactics and sheer will to finally knock him out, winning a measure of respect.
Chapter 16

Ross Murdock, weakened and feverish, struggles through a marsh toward the sea while fighting a psychic pull from the aliens. He reaches the coast, finds a campfire with live embers, and builds a fire to signal the sub. In a parallel narrative, Ross is captured by the horsemen tribe and tied to a funeral pyre for Foscar, but uses his flame-resistant alien suit to survive the flames and escape.
Chapter 18
XVIII
Ross awakens from a strange encounter with an alien force, using pain and fire to resist its mental compulsion. He is later rescued and debriefed by Ashe, who reveals that the project has closed the time post, the Reds suffered a mysterious explosion, and the aliens are actively preventing humanity from accessing their derelict ships. Ashe explains that the tapes they recovered have located several intact alien ships, and the project plans to loot them to gain the secret of space flight. Ross, despite his ordeal, reaffirms his commitment to the project.
