    The chapter details the aftermath of the Gern attack on the Constellation, the division of colonists into Acceptables and Rejects, and the Rejects' desperate landing on the harsh planet Ragnarok. It focuses on the immediate struggle for survival, the loss of Vincent Lake, and Bill Humbolt's emergence as a leader among the stranded colonists.

  3. Chapter 3

    I

    Lake, as the last leader of the Old Ones, establishes a school and initiates the writing of books to preserve knowledge for future generations, hoping to eventually escape Ragnarok and reclaim Athena. He also reveals he knew Schroeder's secret identity as a Gern killer. After years of struggle, Lake passes leadership to Bill Humbolt and dies.

  4. Chapter 4

    Chapter II

    Bill Humbolt leads a prospecting expedition across the Craigs mountain, enduring extreme altitude and thirst. His companion Dan Barber dies of exhaustion and dehydration just short of the summit. Humbolt reaches the spring, rests, and continues south, using an automatic crossbow to fend off unicorns. He returns to the caves and reports the red stratum was only iron stains. George Ord has built a pilot smelter. Humbolt vows to keep searching for metal ore. The narrative then shifts to a classroom decades later, where Teacher Morgan West reads from Walter Humbolt's diary and teaches children about the Gerns and the need to prepare for their return. Howard Lake, as a child, sees a meteor that briefly seems like a Gern cruiser. Ten years later, Howard Lake is leader, with 350 people. Over the years, they adapt mockers for communication and continue developing technology, reaching 819 people by year 150, ready and impatient for the Gerns.

  5. Chapter 5

    III

    Steve Schroeder becomes leader during a period of peace and development. He mines the only iron vein on Ragnarok, faces challenges in aluminum smelting, and witnesses his daughter Julia's reckless courage in killing a unicorn. Meanwhile, he reflects on the need to preserve the colony's core values of loyalty and courage before the Gerns return.

  6. Chapter 6

    IV

    The Ragnarok colonists seize the Gern cruiser, brutally suppress resistance, and prepare for the voyage to Athena. During the journey, they manipulate the Gern Narth into revealing his treachery. In a reflective conversation, Lake and Humbolt look beyond the immediate conflict to a future of exploration and empire among the stars, while the chapter also recalls the tense waiting for the cruiser's arrival and the coordinated plan to capture it.
