Chapter 1
Stolen Cars
Frank, Joe, and Chet discuss a series of mysterious car thefts along Shore Road while riding their motorcycles. They encounter Isaac Fussy, whose brand-new blue Cadillac has just been stolen. The boys give chase on their motorcycles but are forced off the road by a hay wagon, resulting in a crash.
Chapter 2
II: Circumstantial Evidence
After a spill from their motorcycles caused by a hay wagon, Frank, Joe, and Chet continue their pursuit of a stolen car. They stop at Dodd's farm and discover that a state trooper and detectives have found a stolen Packard hidden behind the barn. Jack Dodd and his father are accused of theft when Jack's fishing rod is found in the car, creating a case of circumstantial evidence.
Chapter 3
Under Suspicion
Jack Dodd and his father are accused of stealing a car after a fishing rod belonging to Jack is found inside it. The Hardy boys and Chet Morton support Jack, and Frank suggests investigating a former hired hand, Gus Montrose, who might have framed them.
Chapter 4
Out on Bail
Frank and Joe Hardy learn that Jack Dodd and his father have been arrested for stealing Martin's car, which was found on their farm. Despite public pressure and police confidence in their guilt, the Hardy boys believe in their innocence. They convince their father, Fenton Hardy, to help post bail, using their own reward money. The Hardy boys, Chet, and Jack Dodd pursue Gus Montrose through the woods but lose him. Later, while returning home, they spot two bound men on the beach below an embankment. The men are truck drivers for the Eastern Importing Company who were held up and robbed of a silk cargo worth six thousand dollars. The boys free them and report the holdup to the police, but the truck and its cargo have vanished.
Chapter 9
Following Clues
Fenton Hardy is hired by the Eastern Importing Company to investigate the silk truck holdup, offering a $500 reward. Despite his efforts, the truck and cargo remain missing. The Hardy boys, convinced the Shore Road holds the key to the stolen cars, stake out the area. They overhear two suspicious men discussing past crimes and carrying poles and a bag. The boys follow them through the woods, observing a mysterious light near a brook, believing they are on the trail of something big.
Chapter 10
X: The Great Discovery
The Hardy boys, while investigating what they believe to be automobile thieves, instead stumble upon a nighttime fish spearing operation. They are captured by game wardens who mistake them for accomplices, only to be released after explaining their mistake. Chapter 11
Fish
Chet Morton learns of the Hardy boys' mistaken arrest from a game warden and decides to prank them by placing a smelly fish in Frank's desk. Montrose Again
The Hardy boys attempt another stakeout on Shore Road to catch auto thieves, hiding in their roadster's locker. They encounter a mysterious visitor who inspects their car but does not steal it, and later spot Gus Montrose with a rough companion. Returning home, they learn from their father Fenton Hardy that two more vehicles were stolen that night, and he informs Chief Collig that the stolen cars likely went out Shore Road, though no trace was found in neighboring towns.
Chapter 15
The Suspect
The Hardy boys are exhausted after their late-night stakeout and struggle to stay awake at school, leading to a humorous incident where Frank confuses Abraham Lincoln with Julius Caesar. After lunch, they spot Gus Montrose and follow him, but Montrose confronts them, accusing them of trailing him. The boys stand their ground, and their suspicions about Montrose deepen.

The Cave
The Hardy boys discover a hidden cave in the bluffs containing stolen cars and loot from the Eastern Importing Company truck. After exploring further, they become trapped when a rockfall blocks their escape tunnel.
Chapter 18
The Auto Thieves
Trapped by a cave-in, Frank and Joe Hardy work desperately to clear the rubble blocking their tunnel, only to have a second collapse undo their progress. Forced to seek an alternate route, they discover a narrow passage that leads to another cave, where they overhear a gang of auto thieves discussing their operations and are shocked to recognize the voice of Gus Montrose.
Chapter 19
Captured
The Hardy boys, hiding in a tunnel, overhear Gus Montrose and his gang discussing their car theft operations. After the gang leaves, the boys explore the cave, finding auto keys, a coat, and a wig. They deduce Montrose's involvement and the gang's use of an old road to Atlantic City. However, they are discovered and trapped in the tunnel by a cave-in. After a brief gunfight, they surrender to avoid being shot.
Chapter 20
Tables Turned
The Hardy boys are captured by Gus Montrose and his gang of auto thieves in a cave. Bound and left under guard, Frank manages to burn through his ropes using a candle flame, frees Joe, and together they overpower their guard. They escape the cave, leaving the thief tied up, and head back toward the entrance.
Chapter 21
At the Farmhouse
The Hardy boys escape from the cave through a tunnel and emerge on the beach. They follow a trail through a gully to the Shore Road and arrive at the Dodd farmhouse. Jack Dodd lets them use the telephone to call the police and state troopers, alerting them to the location of the stolen cars and the auto thieves. The Dodd family joins the boys in watching the gully roads until the police arrive. A raid is organized, and the officers proceed down the gully to the beach to capture the gang.
Chapter 22
The Roundup
The Hardy boys lead the police in a raid on the auto thieves' cave, resulting in the capture of Gus Montrose, Sam, Dan, and other gang members. The stolen cars and loot are recovered, and the secret exit through a disguised tree gate is discovered. Jack Dodd and his father are cleared of suspicion as the gang is rounded up and taken to Bayport.
Chapter 23
The Mystery Solved
The automobile thieves are captured, tried, and sentenced. Gus Montrose confesses, clearing Mr. Dodd and Jack Dodd of all suspicion. Frank and Joe Hardy are celebrated as heroes, receiving rewards and praise from the community, including a banquet at the Automobile Club where they are awarded $750 each. Their father warns them about taking too many risks, but the chapter ends with a teaser for their next adventure.
