What happens
Frank Hardy springs into action when the rope breaks, racing to overhanging willows to pull Joe and the unconscious Lester from the swift current. With help from Chet, Phil, and the others, they drag Joe and Lester ashore and render first aid. Lester thanks his rescuers, but Uncle Dock and his surly associates Markel and Kurt make it clear the boys are unwelcome at the mill. When Uncle Dock offers a reward, Kurt snatches the money and tries to press it on them, but the boys refuse. The men's evasiveness and prohibitive milling prices deepen the boys' suspicions.
