Richard Lamb, traveling toward the Lomas de Rocha, stops at a hill to survey the landscape and then encounters an old man by a stream. He follows the man's daughter, Demetria, to a dilapidated estancia, where he meets her elderly, insane father, who mistakes Richard for his long-lost son Calixto Peralta. Richard plays along to comfort Demetria, and the old man raves about a century of wearing a 'crown of nettles' and fighting the Colorados. Demetria later warns Richard to keep their secret.
