Chapter 1
Epigraph
The chapter opens with a Sibylline prophecy in Greek, foretelling that Samos will become sand and Delos will vanish, setting a tone of doom and inevitable destruction.

The Purple Cloud
The narrator, Adam Jeffson, struggles to recall the name of a preacher, Mackay, who denounced the Boreal expedition to the North Pole. He recounts the public frenzy driven by the Stickney bequest, a vast fortune promised to the first man to reach the Pole. Jeffson describes his later wanderings through a deserted London, his whimsical acts of destruction, and a nightmare aboard the Boreal in which he dreams of Clodagh poisoning Dr. Peters. After the storm, the ship becomes icebound, and Clark announces his chosen team for the polar dash, excluding Jeffson, who broods alone on deck.
