The Pilgrim's Progress explained

Christian, burdened by his sins, flees the City of Destruction after reading a book and being directed by Evangelist. He falls into the Slough of Despond, is misled by Mr. Worldly Wiseman, but eventually reaches the Wicket Gate and the Cross, where his burden falls off. He continues his journey through various trials, including the Hill Difficulty, the Palace Beautiful, the Valley of Humiliation, the Valley of the Shadow of Death, and Vanity Fair, where he is imprisoned with Faithful. Faithful is martyred, but Christian escapes with Hopeful. They are captured by Giant Despair in Doubting Castle but escape using the key of Promise. They finally cross the River of Death and enter the Celestial City. The second part follows Christiana, her children, and Mercy as they undertake the same pilgrimage with the guide Great-heart, facing similar and new trials, ultimately reaching the Celestial City.
