What happens
Glassdale reveals to Inspector Mitchington that Stephen Folliot is actually Falkiner Wraye, a man who cheated John Brake years ago. Dr. Ransford returns from London with confirmation that Folliot is Wraye and that the verger Fladgate is actually Flood, the other man who helped cheat Brake. The police confront Fladgate, who admits his identity but denies involvement in Brake's death. The party then moves to arrest Folliot, who shoots Bryce dead before poisoning himself.
