Sir Philip Harclay visits Baron Fitz-Owen, who initially receives him coldly due to the conflict with his brother. Through Lord Clifford's mediation and Sir Philip's honorable conduct, the baron's reserve melts. They visit the wounded Lord Lovel, who accuses Sir Philip of using his victory ungenerously. Sir Philip defends his motives, revealing he has taken the true heir of Lovel under his protection. Meanwhile, Sir Philip accepts lodging from the peasant John Wyatt, who sends his son to inform the castle. The baron later returns to the Castle of Lovel with Sir Philip, where Edmund, overwhelmed, is welcomed as the rightful lord.
