The Mysterious Island · Chapter
Trial of the Canoe explained
The colonists complete their canoe and set out to explore the western coast.
What happens
The colonists complete their canoe and set out to explore the western coast. They discover a large box buoyed by barrels washed ashore at a point they name Jetsam Point. Towing it back to Granite House, they open it to find various manufactured goods, though Pencroff is disappointed at the lack of tobacco. The discovery prompts a plan for a thorough exploration of the island. That evening, Herbert asks Cyrus Smith to read from the Bible, and Pencroff suggests opening it at random; the verse found is Matthew 7:8: 'For everyone that asketh, receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth.'
