What happens
The colonists confirm the pirates' intentions to land on Lincoln Island. Ayrton volunteers to swim to the brig Speedy to assess its strength, accompanied partway by Pencroff. He overhears the convicts' plans and attempts to blow up the ship's powder magazine but is discovered and wounded. He escapes by swimming back, and the colonists realize they face fifty convicts with only six defenders.
