The court, composed of brutish Kalkar officials, charges him with resisting an officer and assault with a deadly weapon. Julian defends himself, arguing that the tax collector Soor had no right to evict his family and that a cheese is not a deadly weapon. His fearless demeanor embarrasses the court, and Or-tis turns on Soor, ultimately releasing Julian with a warning. Julian returns home to his family, Jim, Mollie, and Juana, and later walks Juana home, feeling a magnetic attraction. He confronts Peter Johansen, accusing him of being a spy, and Johansen draws a knife.
