Chapter 1
Author's Note
L. Frank Baum explains the origin of this book, describing how letters from children—especially one little girl named Dorothy—prompted him to write a sequel to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, fulfilling his promise after receiving over a thousand requests.

Dedication
The author dedicates the book to David C. Montgomery and Fred A. Stone, the actors who portrayed the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow, acknowledging their performances that delighted children across the land.
Chapter 3
The Marvelous Land of Oz
Tip, a young boy living with the witch Mombi, creates a pumpkin-headed man named Jack Pumpkinhead using a powder of life. After Mombi threatens to turn Tip into a statue, Tip and Jack flee, creating a Sawhorse for transportation. They journey to the Emerald City, which has been conquered by General Jinjur and her army of girls. The Scarecrow, former ruler, is deposed. Tip and his friends escape to seek help from the Tin Woodman, meeting the Woggle-Bug along the way. They construct a flying Gump and travel to Glinda the Good, who reveals that Tip is actually Princess Ozma, the rightful ruler of Oz, hidden by Mombi. Ozma is restored to the throne.
Chapter 4
Tip Manufactures a Pumpkinhead
Tip, a young boy living with the sorceress Mombi in the Gillikin country, carves a pumpkin into a head and constructs a full wooden body, dressing it in Mombi's old clothes and naming it Jack Pumpkinhead.
Chapter 5
The Marvelous Powder of Life
Tip creates a pumpkin-headed man to scare Mombi, but she discovers it and uses the Powder of Life to bring Jack Pumpkinhead to life. After Jack comes to life, Mombi threatens to transform Tip into a marble statue, forcing Tip to contemplate escape.
Chapter 6
The Flight of the Fugitives
Tip decides to run away rather than be turned into a marble statue by Mombi. He takes the Powder of Life and frees Jack Pumpkinhead, whom he created. Together they flee south toward the Emerald City, with Tip explaining the history of Oz, including the Wizard, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and Dorothy.
Chapter 7
Tip Makes an Experiment in Magic
Tip and Jack Pumpkinhead continue their journey, and Tip reflects on the fragility of Jack's wooden joints. After Jack's joints give way when he tries to sit, they rest by a sawhorse. Jack's questions prompt Tip to realize the sawhorse resembles a real horse, and he decides to use the Powder of Life to animate it. Recalling Mombi's gestures and incantations, Tip successfully brings the sawhorse to life, much to his and Jack's amazement.
Chapter 8
The Awakening of the Sawhorse
Tip brings the Sawhorse to life, and after a series of comical mishaps involving the horse's lack of ears and understanding, he fashions ears from bark and teaches the creature basic commands. Jack Pumpkinhead rides the Sawhorse as they journey toward the Emerald City, eventually camping for the night by the yellow brick road.
Chapter 9
Jack Pumpkinhead's Ride to the Emerald City
Tip, Jack Pumpkinhead, and the Sawhorse continue their journey to the Emerald City. They cross a river by having the Sawhorse swim, but Tip is left behind when the Sawhorse runs off at top speed. Jack and the Sawhorse arrive at the Emerald City alone, where the Guardian of the Gates and the Soldier with the Green Whiskers escort Jack to meet the Scarecrow.
Chapter 10
His Majesty the Scarecrow
Jack Pumpkinhead meets the Scarecrow, the King of the Emerald City. They initially struggle to communicate, believing they speak different languages, and call for an interpreter. Jellia Jamb is brought in, but it is soon revealed that all Ozians speak the same language. After the misunderstanding is cleared, the Scarecrow and Jack become friends.
Chapter 11
General Jinjur’s Army of Revolt
Tip encounters General Jinjur, who leads an army of girls to conquer the Emerald City. They disarm the Guardian of the Gate and the Soldier with the Green Whiskers, capturing the city without bloodshed.
Chapter 12
The Scarecrow Plans an Escape
Tip slips away from the girls and follows the Soldier with the Green Whiskers to the palace, where the Scarecrow and Jack Pumpkinhead are playing quoits. The Soldier announces that the Emerald City has been conquered by General Jinjur's army of girls. The Scarecrow, Tip, and Jack plan an escape to the Tin Woodman's domain. They retrieve the Sawhorse from the treasury, tie themselves together, and make a daring dash through the city gates, knocking over guards and citizens before crossing a river.
Chapter 13
The Journey to the Tin Woodman
Tip, Jack Pumpkinhead, the Scarecrow, and the Sawhorse cross a river, suffer damage from the water, and repair themselves before continuing their journey. They camp overnight, with Tip sleeping while his companions keep watch.
Chapter 14
A Nickel-Plated Emperor
Tip, the Scarecrow, Jack Pumpkinhead, and the Sawhorse arrive at the Tin Woodman's palace in the Winkie Country. They find the Emperor in the midst of being nickel-plated, but he joyfully welcomes them. The Scarecrow recounts the revolt of the girls in the Emerald City, and the Tin Woodman agrees to help recapture it. After preparations, the group sets out on their return journey.
Chapter 15
Mr. H. M. Woggle-Bug, T.E.
The Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, Tip, Jack Pumpkinhead, and the Sawhorse encounter a field of enchanted sunflowers created by Mombi's magic, which they overcome by closing their eyes and pressing forward. After the Sawhorse breaks a leg, they meet the Highly Magnified and Thoroughly Educated Woggle-Bug, who introduces himself and offers to tell his story. Meanwhile, General Jinjur, alarmed by the Scarecrow's escape, has summoned Mombi to aid her rebel army.
Chapter 16
A Highly Magnified History
The Woggle-Bug recounts his origin story: born an ordinary insect, he lived in a schoolhouse hearth, absorbing knowledge from Professor Nowitall's lectures. After being magnified by the Professor's instrument, he escaped and later met Tip, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, Jack Pumpkinhead, and the Sawhorse. The group solves the Sawhorse's broken leg by using one of Jack's wooden legs, then continues their journey to the Emerald City.
Chapter 17
Old Mombi Indulges in Witchcraft
The Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, Tip, Jack Pumpkinhead, Sawhorse, and Woggle-Bug continue their journey to the Emerald City, aided by the Queen of the Field Mice. They overcome a series of magical illusions sent by Mombi—a phantom river, a granite wall, whirling roads, and a sheet of flame—by following the mouse queen, who reveals them as deceptions. Along the way, the Woggle-Bug's pedantic punning causes friction, but the party restores harmony. Upon reaching the city gates, the mouse queen bids them farewell.
Chapter 18
The Prisoners of the Queen
The Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, Tip, Jack Pumpkinhead, Sawhorse, and Woggle-Bug enter the Emerald City unopposed and confront General Jinjur, who has usurped the throne. After a debate on how to deal with her, Jinjur signals her Army of Revolt, which disarms the group and takes them prisoner. The Scarecrow releases mice from his straw chest, causing a panic that drives Jinjur and her army away. The group then bars the palace doors to plan their next move.
Chapter 19
The Scarecrow Takes Time to Think
The Scarecrow and his companions, trapped in the Emerald City palace by General Jinjur's army, debate their predicament. The Scarecrow devises a plan to escape through the air by building a flying machine, which the Tin Woodman will construct and Tip will bring to life with the remaining Powder of Life. Jack Pumpkinhead gets a new leg, and the group begins gathering materials.
Chapter 20
The Astonishing Flight of the Gump
The adventurers gather an odd assortment of items on the palace roof—a Gump's head, two sofas, a broom, ropes, and palm leaves—and the Tin Woodman assembles them into a flying machine. Tip uses the remaining magic powder to bring the contraption to life, and after a chaotic first flight, the Gump obeys his command to return.
Chapter 21
In the Jackdaw's Nest
The Gump, newly animated, carries the group southward but crashes into a cliff, dumping them into a jackdaw's nest. Trapped and facing the return of the thieving birds, the Scarecrow orchestrates a clever hiding strategy: Tip and the Woggle-Bug are covered with straw from his disassembled body, while Jack Pumpkinhead's head is removed for safety.
Chapter 22
Dr. Nikidik’s Famous Wishing Pills
The group battles a swarm of Jackdaws that destroy the Scarecrow's straw stuffing, but they escape by stuffing him with stolen money from the nest. They then use Dr. Nikidik's wishing pills to repair the Gump's broken wings, enabling their escape.
Chapter 23
The Scarecrow Appeals to Glinda the Good
The Scarecrow and his companions seek Glinda's help to reclaim the Emerald City from General Jinjur. Glinda reveals that the rightful heir to the throne is Princess Ozma, hidden by the Wizard. She decides to march on the Emerald City to capture Mombi and force her to reveal Ozma's location. Meanwhile, the group escapes a Jackdaw nest using the flying Gump, but loses the Wishing Pills, leaving them lost.
Chapter 24
The Tin-Woodman Plucks a Rose
Glinda's army surrounds the Emerald City, demanding Mombi's surrender. Jinjur and Mombi attempt to deceive Glinda by having Jellia Jamb impersonate the witch, but Glinda uncovers the trick. Mombi then transforms herself into a red rose to hide in the palace garden, and the Tin Woodman unknowingly plucks the rose, carrying her out of the city.
Chapter 25
The Transformation of Old Mombi
Mombi, transformed into a rose, hides in the Tin Woodman's buttonhole but is discovered by Glinda. She attempts to escape through a series of transformations—first into a shadow, then a black ant, and finally a griffin—but Glinda pursues her on the Sawhorse. After a long chase across the desert, the griffin collapses, and Glinda captures Mombi, restoring her to her original form.
Chapter 26
Princess Ozma of Oz
Glinda captures Mombi and forces her to reveal the truth about the missing Princess Ozma. Mombi confesses that the Wizard brought her the baby Ozma and that she transformed the princess into a boy—Tip. Despite Tip's reluctance, preparations are made to restore him to his true form as Princess Ozma, the rightful ruler of the Emerald City.
Chapter 27
The Riches of Content
After the revelation of Tip's true identity as Princess Ozma, the new queen takes the throne of the Emerald City. Jinjur initially defies Glinda and Ozma, but the Gump flies over the city walls to capture her, ending the war. Ozma rules wisely with advice from Glinda and the Woggle-Bug. The Gump is dismantled at its own request, the Sawhorse is cared for, Jack Pumpkinhead remains with Ozma, and the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman return to the Winkie Kingdom, reflecting on the true riches of contentment.
