Angus seeks the aid of Flambeau and Father Brown. Despite a police guard, Smythe is murdered and his body disappears, later found stabbed in a canal. Father Brown deduces that the killer used a disguise as a postman, exploiting the fact that people answer what they think is meant, not what is literally said.
