They hide behind a glass door and watch as Jules enters, removes a bottle from bin 17, applies a black salve to the neck, and replaces it. Nella wants to stop him, but Babylon restrains her, and Jules escapes through the grating.

The Bottle of Wine
Theodore Racksole's plan to trap Jules in the wine cellar is foiled by a policeman's interference, allowing Jules to escape via a steam launch on the Thames. Racksole then conspires with Prince Aribert to use the poisoned bottle of Romanée-Conti to expose accomplices within the hotel. At dinner, Prince Eugen initially orders a different wine but ultimately requests the Romanée-Conti. Old Hans serves it, and despite Aribert's warning that it is poisoned, Hans offers to drink it to prove his innocence. Aribert knocks the glass away, but Eugen collapses unconscious, leaving Aribert and Hans in shock.

The Steam Launch
Theodore Racksole, determined to capture Jules, enlists the help of a Customs officer, George Hazell, to search for the steam launch that carried Tom Jackson away. After a tense standoff, a mudlark (a barge boy) shoves Jules into the water, where he is captured and taken to the Grand Babylon Hotel.
