They attend a variety show, where the Gadfly is deeply affected by the performance of a hunchback, revealing his own inner torment. Later, they encounter a beaten, starving child in the street. The Gadfly tenderly cares for the boy, and with Gemma's help, they take the child to her lodgings, despite Zita Reni's objections.
