Kalumah is discovered nearly dead on the shore of the floating island by Mrs. Barnett and Madge. After reviving her, Kalumah recounts her harrowing journey: she had traveled from Russian America to visit her friends at Fort Hope, only to find that Cape Bathurst had disappeared. Realizing the peninsula had become a floating island, she lit a signal fire and later launched her kayak into the storm to reach the island. After seventy hours at sea, she was thrown ashore by a wave, where Mrs. Barnett and Madge found her. Mrs. Barnett asks Kalumah to keep the island's true situation secret to avoid alarming the colonists.
