Chapter 1
The Black Bag Left on a Doorstep
Loveday Brooke is briefed by her chief, Ebenezer Dyer, on the Cathrow jewellery robbery. The theft occurred during a Christmas Eve dinner at Craigen Court, with entry gained through an unguarded ground-floor window. Suspicion falls on the French maid, Stephanie Delcroix, who left the safe unlocked and has been behaving hysterically. Loveday is sent to investigate discreetly among the servants. On her way to the estate, she meets a young farmer, Holt, who passionately defends Stephanie's innocence and asks Loveday to intercede on his behalf.
Chapter 2
The Murder at Troyte’s Hill
Loveday Brooke is briefed by Mr. Dyer on the murder of Alexander Henderson, the lodge-keeper at Troyte’s Hill. The crime scene is bizarre, with the room turned upside down, and robbery is ruled out. Griffiths of the Newcastle Constabulary suspects Harry Craven, the son of the house, who is supposedly ill with typhoid. Loveday goes undercover as an amanuensis to Mr. Craven, the scholar and father, to investigate from within. She discovers that the butler Hales owed Sandy money, and that Harry Craven was seen pawning a valuable epergne on the night of the murder. Griffiths prepares to arrest Harry, but Loveday continues her quiet investigation.
Chapter 3
The Redhill Sisterhood
Loveday Brooke is called to Redhill by Mr. Dyer to investigate a suspicious Sisterhood that may be connected to a series of burglaries. She learns from Inspector Gunning that the Sisters, led by Sister Monica, have been begging in villages where robberies subsequently occur. While watching the Sisterhood's house, Loveday realizes she is being watched herself. To avoid her spies, she recruits a young cyclist named George White to act as her deputy, watching the Sisters from her hired room while she remains hidden at her hotel. She suspects that one of the Sisters may be a missing girl named Annie Lee.
Chapter 4
A Princess's Vengeance
Loveday Brooke takes on the case of Lucie Cunier, a young foreign secretary who has mysteriously disappeared from the household of Mrs. Druce. Major Druce, who is engaged to the Princess Dullah-Veih, suspects foul play and hires Loveday. At a reception, Loveday reveals her profession, causing Lady Gwynne to flee in haste. Loveday investigates Lucie's room and uncovers a plot involving Lady Gwynne, the Princess, and a Genevese ring, leading to the discovery that Lucie has been hidden by a milliner, Madame Céline, to prevent her from interfering with the Major's engagement.

Drawn Daggers
Loveday Brooke and Mr. Dyer discuss the mysterious dagger sketches sent to Mr. Hawke. Loveday reveals that she herself sent the three daggers, explaining that the drawings are not daggers but the Danvers family crest, a cross fitchée, suggesting a connection to Henri d'Anvers. She traced a passenger named William Wentworth Danvers who arrived from Peking on a later ship, and identified the supposed Miss Monroe as Irish by her pronunciation of 'hush'. Mr. Hawke arrives with a new envelope containing two daggers, and Loveday notes they were drawn by a different hand than the first. The conversation turns to the lost necklace, with Mr. Dyer suggesting the daggers are a joke, while Loveday considers them a serious threat connected to the robbery.
Chapter 6
The Ghost of Fountain Lane
Loveday Brooke, on holiday in Brighton, is approached by Inspector Clampe with a case involving a stolen cheque from the Rev. Charles Turner. Despite the inspector's insistence on its importance, Loveday is more intrigued by a newspaper account of a ghost in Fountain Lane. She investigates the ghost, connecting it to a millenarian preacher and a religious sect, ultimately revealing that the ghost was a manifestation of the sect's apocalyptic beliefs. The investigation leads to the arrest of Rogers, who cashed the stolen cheque, and Maria Lisle, who stole it. Loveday explains her reasoning, linking the ghost's soldierly appearance to the millenarians' identification of Napoleon with Apollyon.
Chapter 7
Missing!
Loveday Brooke unravels the mystery of Irené Golding's disappearance, revealing that the woman believed drowned was actually her mother, Irené Mascagni, who had faked her death years ago. Through careful observation and manipulation of Lena, the maid, Loveday tracks down the missing daughter, René, who had been living with her grandfather in Italy. The chapter concludes with a heartfelt reunion between René and her father, Mr. Golding, as Loveday explains the full story to Inspector Ramsay.
