Dr. Horker's scopolamine injection inadvertently frees the demonic 'Other' personality of Nicholas Devine, who exults in his newfound freedom and exerts hypnotic control over both Horker and Pat. He forces Pat to bind Horker and attempts to sexually dominate her, but Horker's loud bellow breaks the spell. Pat retrieves Horker's revolver and shoots Nicholas Devine, who falls to the floor with a head wound.

XXXI: “Not Humanly Possible”
Pat awakens on Nick's couch after fainting. Dr. Horker tends to Nick, who has been shot in the base of the brain. An ambulance takes Nick to Briggs General, where Horker prepares to perform a trephination to remove the bullet. Pat struggles with despair and the possibility of Nick's death, while Horker admits the attack's paralyzing fascination is 'not humanly possible,' though he remains skeptical of Pat's demon theory.

XXXII: Revelation
After the operation, Dr. Horker informs Pat that Nick will live. He explains that he removed a parasitic second brain, which he describes as a tumor-like growth that was the source of the evil entity. Pat and Horker discuss the nature of the creature, its sadistic influence, and the possibility that Nick's character may change now that the struggle is over.
