Mrs. Leggett reports seeing a suspicious man near midnight, and her daughter Gabrielle recalls a similar sighting. The detective finds one diamond planted in the grass, suspects an inside job, and inadvertently causes the maid Minnie Hershey to quit in protest.

II: Long-Nose

III: Something Black
The narrator reconnects with Owen Fitzstephan, who shares his observations about the enigmatic Edgar Leggett and his family. Fitzstephan describes Leggett as secretive and decadent, and Gabrielle as odd and hostile toward her father. The narrator later visits Rhino Tingley and witnesses Gabrielle leaving Minnie Hershey's building. He then travels to interview Mrs. Begg, Leggett's former housekeeper, who reveals that Leggett's sister-in-law Alice Dain and her daughter Gabrielle arrived unexpectedly in 1923, and that Leggett later married Alice.

He visits Fitzstephan, who offers to interview Mrs. Leggett. The next morning, Eric Collinson reports Gabrielle missing and mentions Minnie Hershey wearing Gabrielle's ring. The narrator checks marriage records for Edgar Leggett and Alice Dain, and receives information about Upton's criminal past. He confronts the Leggetts about Gabrielle's disappearance, but gets evasive answers.

V: Gabrielle
The narrator receives a telegram identifying Harry Ruppert as the suspect in the diamond burglary and murder. Police pick up Rhino Tingley with jewelry identified as belonging to the Leggetts. The narrator sends Dick Foley and Mickey Linehan to tail Minnie Hershey. Eric Collinson joins the narrator to find Gabrielle. They trace her to the Temple of the Holy Grail, where Aaronia Haldorn reluctantly allows them to see her. They find Gabrielle heavily drugged in her room. The narrator dresses her and they take her away, but Collinson refuses to take her home, driving fast down the peninsula instead.
Chapter 9
VI: The Man from Devil’s Island
The narrator and his companions arrive at the Leggett home to find Owen Fitzstephan, who reveals that Edgar Leggett has committed suicide. In the laboratory, the police and Mrs. Leggett are present, and the narrator reads Leggett's confession letter aloud. The letter reveals Leggett's true identity as Maurice de Mayenne, an escaped convict from Devil's Island, who murdered his first wife, fled, and later killed a blackmailer named Ruppert before taking his own life.

VII: The Curse
The narrator reads a confession letter from Edgar Leggett, but declares it a murder, not a suicide. Gabrielle Leggett accuses Mrs. Leggett of stabbing a man in the kitchen. The narrator accuses Mrs. Leggett of murdering her husband. Mrs. Leggett then reveals a horrifying past: she trained a young Gabrielle to kill her own mother, Lily Dain, as part of a twisted sibling rivalry. She gloats over her manipulation and the curse on the Dain bloodline. As Gabrielle screams and collapses, Mrs. Leggett draws a gun and flees, with Fitzstephan and the narrator in pursuit.

But and If
The narrator and Fitzstephan debate Mrs. Leggett's psychological motives, the Dain curse, and the inconsistencies in the case over dinner. The narrator questions why Mrs. Leggett would kill her husband after years of waiting for him, and discusses Gabrielle's flight to the Haldorns. Later, at the inquests, the narrator sees Gabrielle with Madison Andrews but apart from Eric Collinson. The chapter ends with a call from the Old Man summoning the narrator back as the Leggett case becomes active again.

The narrative shifts to the Temple of the Holy Grail, a cult led by Joseph and Aaronia Haldorn. Gabrielle Leggett becomes deeply involved with the cult, seeking solace from her personal demons. The Op investigates the cult's activities, uncovering layers of deception and exploitation.

Tad's Blind Man
The narrator meets Madison Andrews, Gabrielle Leggett's guardian, who explains that on Doctor Riese's advice he allowed Gabrielle to stay at the Temple of the Holy Grail. After a sudden alarming relapse, a compromise is reached: Gabrielle remains at the Temple under the narrator's watchful eye. The narrator moves into a room opposite hers, observes her maid Minnie Hershey's suspicious late-night errand, and confronts her about procuring drugs. He spends a restless night keeping vigil.

X: Dead Flowers
The narrator wakes disoriented to find Gabrielle missing from her room. He searches the house and encounters her holding a bloody dagger; she claims to have killed Doctor Riese. She leads him and Eric Collinson to the altar where Riese's body lies with four stab wounds. The narrator later returns to find the body, blood, and dagger gone, and the iron door locked.
Chapter 15
XI: God
The narrator, recovering from a drugged state, encounters a supernatural entity in Minnie Hershey's room, then fights off an attacker in the dark. He disarms the maid and revives Minnie. Later, at the Temple of the Holy Grail, he confronts Joseph Haldorn, who claims to be God. Despite shooting him multiple times, Joseph advances until the narrator kills him with a dagger. Gabrielle Leggett and Aaronia Haldorn are rescued, and Minnie reveals her fear that Joseph might return in another form.

XII: The Unholy Grail
The Op recounts the full story of the Haldorn cult to Owen Fitzstephan over dinner. He explains how Joseph and Aaronia Haldorn, former actors, created a fraudulent religious cult using mechanical tricks, gas, and a steam ghost to manipulate wealthy members. Joseph Haldorn became obsessed with Gabrielle Leggett, leading to a violent climax where he attempted to murder his wife on the altar. The Op killed Haldorn by driving a dagger through his neck after seven bullets failed to stop him. Gabrielle was found crouching beside the altar, unaware of how she got there. The Op's investigation is concluded, as Madison Andrews has ended his employment.

Part III: Quesada
The narrative shifts to Quesada, a coastal town, where the Op investigates further into the Leggett case, encountering new characters and deepening the mystery surrounding Gabrielle Leggett and the Haldorn cult.

XIII: The Cliff Road
The narrator receives a telegram from Eric Collinson urgently requesting his presence in Quesada. After arriving late, he finds a note from Collinson asking him to wait at the hotel. Ignoring the instruction, he sets out at dawn along a cliff path to the Collinson house. He discovers the house empty, finds evidence of a struggle—a .38 pistol, spent shells, muddy and bloodstained clothing, and morphine—in Gabrielle's room. Returning to town, he meets Deputy Sheriff Ben Rolly and leads him to the cliff where he had earlier found Eric Collinson's body. Rolly examines the scene but finds no clear evidence of how the death occurred.
Chapter 19
XIV: The Crumpled Chrysler
The Narrator and Deputy Ben Rolly investigate the Collinsons' house, finding evidence of a struggle and Gabrielle's flight. They interview neighbor Debro and then Mary Nunez, the Carters' maid, who claims she was sick and not at the house that morning. The Narrator suspects Mary is lying. They then attempt to trace Gabrielle's Chrysler roadster along the East road.

XV: I've Killed Him
The investigation into Eric Collinson's death intensifies as local officials, including Sheriff Feeney and district attorney Vernon, conclude that Gabrielle Collinson is the killer. The narrator argues that the death is murder, not suicide or accident, and insists there are hidden links between the deaths of Gabrielle's parents, Doctor Riese, and now her husband. Fitzstephan reveals a cryptic phone call and a ransom note, suggesting a possible kidnapping plot. The search for Gabrielle continues with no results.

XVI: The Night Hunt
The narrator returns to Poston and Quesada, meeting reporters and the district attorney Vernon. He delivers Fitzstephan's story, leading to a search of Harvey Whidden's cabin where evidence is planted. Mrs. Cotton provides an alibi for Whidden, implicating her husband Dick Cotton in the crimes. The chapter ends with a tense confrontation and a search for Cotton and Whidden.

XVII: Below Dull Point
The chapter opens with the narrator learning that Cotton arrived at his mother's house Saturday morning, then follows the discovery of Mrs. Cotton's murder and her dying confession implicating Harvey Whidden. The sheriff, Vernon, Fitzstephan, and the narrator race by boat to a hidden cove below Dull Point, where they confront Whidden. In a shootout, Whidden is killed, and they find Gabrielle Collinson hiding in a cave. She recounts being kidnapped by Whidden, her failed suicide attempt, and her husband Eric's murder.

XVIII: The Pineapple
The narrator and Owen Fitzstephan debate the logic behind the murders, with the narrator insisting a single mad mind is behind them and even suggesting Gabrielle herself might be the culprit. Tom Fink, a former Temple helper, arrives to share information but is killed when a bomb explodes in the narrator's hotel room. Fitzstephan is killed, and the narrator finds Gabrielle in a terrified, animal-like state. Mickey Linehan and Ben Rolly arrive, and the nurse explains she briefly left Gabrielle's room to get stationery, returning only after the explosion.

XIX: The Degenerate
After the bomb explosion, the narrator and Rolly investigate the hotel room and interview witnesses. Gabrielle Collinson is moved to a new room, and the narrator attempts to reason with her about her belief in a family curse and her own degeneracy, arguing that she is sane and resilient. Gabrielle reveals that Owen Fitzstephan loved her, and discusses her troubled marriage and her use of drugs.

XX: The House in the Cove
The Narrator drives Gabrielle and Mrs. Herman to the house in the cove. Gabrielle is initially depressed but brightens after the Narrator reassures her about her sanity, her addiction, and the curse. Mickey Linehan reports that Madison Andrews visited Aaronia Haldorn in San Mateo. The Narrator visits Tom Fink, who reveals Harvey Whidden is his stepson. Andrews arrives and tries to take Gabrielle back to San Francisco, but she refuses. The Narrator and Gabrielle discuss her morphine addiction and plan to begin her withdrawal in two days.

XXI: Aaronia Haldorn
The narrator continues to manage Gabrielle's morphine withdrawal at the cove house, administering a gradual detox regimen. He travels to Quesada and the county seat, checking in with Rolly and the sheriff, and calls the agency to reassure the client. Madison Andrews arrives demanding to see Gabrielle, but the narrator rebuffs him, threatening legal countermeasures. Mickey Linehan reports that Aaronia Haldorn (Mary Nunez) has taken a knife. Aaronia Haldorn herself arrives in a limousine, speaking to MacMan as the narrator comes out.
Chapter 27
XXII: Confessional
The Op oversees Gabrielle's morphine withdrawal, enduring her violent fits and nightmares. Fitzstephan reveals his Dain lineage and plots an insanity defense. Mary Nunez steals the morphine bindles from the Op's pocket. Gabrielle begins to recover and asks the Op why he helped her, hinting at a deeper emotional connection.
Chapter 28
XXIII: The Circus
Owen Fitzstephan's trial for murder becomes a media circus as he pleads insanity, revealing his orchestration of the Leggett family's destruction, the cult, and multiple murders. The narrator reflects on Fitzstephan's hatred of him for suggesting he might actually be insane, and Gabrielle discusses her morphine addiction and Fitzstephan's cruel attempts to cure her.
