Ramon Alonzo receives a letter from his father via the magician, reads it alone, and decides to trade his shadow for the knowledge of making gold. The magician creates a false shadow as a copy, severs Ramon's true shadow, and locks it in the shadow-box. The magician then lectures on the philosopher's stone and the corrupting power of gold. Ramon, feeling homesick, asks for a half-holiday to visit Aragona, which the magician grants. Afterward, Ramon tells the charwoman about the shadow-box, hoping to rescue her shadow, unaware that his own shadow has been taken.
